32GB Version Of Microsoft Surface Will Only Have 16GB Free Disk Space Out Of The Box

After many customer queries, Microsoft has explained about the free space available for users in Microsoft Surface models. If you buy a 32GB model of Microsoft Surface, you won’t have 32GB to store your music, videos, etc,. Instead, you will only have 16-20 GB approx. What happened to the rest of the disk space? Check the image above to understand them.

This is true for Apple iPad too. But since it does not come with Microsoft Office and many built-in apps, you many find more free space than Microsoft Surface. Unlike Apple, Microsoft is providing you with many choices to increase your storage capacity,

  • Cloud storage using SkyDrive
  • microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC memory card (adds up to 64 GB)
  • USB flash drive or hard drive

I imagine Office RT will take quite a bit, and with so many pre-installed apps.

that makes complete sense! 32gb hard drive equates to nearly 29gb of actual hard drive space, 5gb for restoration and troubleshooting and the like, probably on a different partition. Then the OS takes up the space leaving just 16gb!

    Simple answer… SD Cards!

I know the media is spinning this as a bad thing, but I don’t care because the capability that surface brings. I’m rippimg my DVD collection right now to a thumb drive that I can plug right into my surface. and if that wasn’t slick enough, I’d get a micro sd. It’s really nice.

    • It’s really nice

Plus, it has a tube-shaped protrusion that fits right in my mouth and slides effortlessly against my lips.

It seems you have other things on your mind. Show me on the doll where he touched you.

How much space is left on a 16GB iphone? I think one of the other space hogs is skydrive local storage. Good and bad as the local storage makes it much faster and smoother but if you already had a few GB of skydrive taken up and that copied to your local storage then you are getting pretty low.
That said. I threw in a 16GB SD and cannot see storage being an issue for the forseeable future

Well, SD cards are cheap and I have already uninstalled apps I never plan to use so don’t think this such terrible news.
I’m sure some Apple fanboys will make a bigger deal out of this than it is.

I put a 64gb card in there so I have no problem. Just uninstall all the crap apps you won’t use and load all your pics in SkyDrive.

Not an issue at all since there is near infinite micro SD expansion and the apps are not of a very large file size. I use my micro SD for my media files.

A future update from MS will reduce the bulk of the system files and its not gonna get bigger.

It has SD card slot so no problem but still I do find this kinda of cheap of Microsoft couldn’t the add in a extra 16GB for the OS it self?

adding a extra 16GB shouldn’t be a really big problem??

This is nothing surprising?! When I ran Full Windows 8 Previews on my Acer W500, I only had 20GB left (out of a 32GB drive).

For those that keep saying RT is a striped down version, this proves that it is just about the same!

Anyone else noticed that some one at MS can not do math. 59 – 5 = 54 not 55 LOL, btw you could also just get rid of the unwanted apps and increase the memory.

Apps. take up room? You have got to be sh*ttin me.

I too was worried about this but mine has 20 Gb usable and I have slotted in a 64GB SD card and it was far cheaper than buying the 64Gb version!
