Asus Taichi Dual Screen Windows 8 Ultrabook on video

imageSo far the most interesting and arguably desirable new Windows 8 tablet/laptop hybrid is the Dual screen Asus Taichi with 2 full HD screens, one touch, on the same device.

Above is a brief look at the amazing device on video published by TechinStyle.

The ASUS TAICHI is a slim and stylish ultraportable with an astonishing key feature – both 11.6″ and 13.3″ models have a brilliant double-sided LED-backlit IPS/FHD display. With a touch screen on the outside of the lid, the TAICHI opens up a whole host of new mobile possibilities as it plays the role of both notebook and tablet.

With the lid open, the TAICHI is just like any notebook computer, and comes complete with a full-size QWERTY backlit keyboard and track pad. With the lid closed, however, the TAICHI instantly becomes a multi-touch tablet computer with stylus support, bringing a degree of flexibility that has never before been experienced on an ordinary notebook. Better still, while they provide access to the same hardware, the two screens are completely independent of each other and can also be used simultaneously, which means the Taichi can be shared with two users for a host of innovative new applications.

The TAICHI is as light and thin as the ASUS ZENBOOK™ and delivers uncompromised mobile performance, with 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processors, fast SSD storage and dual band 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Are our readers salivating, or is it just a too weird (and likely expensive) device? Let us know below.

Wow a hybrid that actually looks good and different without trying too hard (*cough*swivel screen*cough*)

While a very neat idea, I fail to see what benefit this design has over notebook with a spinning screen. How often will two people try and use the computer at the same time, one on front and other on back, and how will the OS handle it? Also, if two people did decide to use it at the same time, the screen would have to be perfectly upright, which is almost always awkward to work on with a notebook.

i use my laptops and tablets quite often to show stuff to friends. this would be perfect in those cases.

+ as a dj, i’d like to run my dj software on the inner screen, and some funky animations on the outer screen. would be fun.

This is perfect, I have been looking for device like this for a few months now. My purpose for it is I do presentations with business owners. In some cases in their store from. (me on one side of the counter and them on the other) and it other cases in a restaurant or coffee house.. (Again, me on one side of the table and them on the other). This would definitely solve the issues I have.

What would the problem domain they trying to resolve with two screens like that?

Lets say you give a lot of presentations in public, this would be good for a table so an audience can gather in front as you demonstrate instead of having to all crowd behind you.

It would be great for retail where they use the Xiimo POS application on their Windows 8 as an app – and the customer gets a receipt view on the other side that they can digitally sign with a stylus or their finger tip.

Looks amazing but I’d worry about the back touch screen getting scratched as it doesn’t look like it has a screen cover like the iPad does? Plus I expect it will be very expensive!

WOW, WOW, WOW. That’s what I’m talking about! Price it RIGHT PLEASE.

hmmm as much as I love asus I dont´t see the point of having 2 screens like that. I would much rather prefer a more powerfull single screen notebook/tablet hybrid but hey, guess we will see

This looks really dumb. I can see how it might be useful in some niche applications, but generally you are only going to be using one screen at a time. A second screen just adds cost and bulk. This reminds me of of HTC surround which has an “interesting” design but really wasn’t useful. The surround did not sell well.

I can imagine someone watching an inappropriate video and forgets to turn off mirroring.

I am involved in alot of collaborative meetings at coffee shops and I hate having to turn around my computer to show what I’m trying to show people. This resolves that issue by allowing people next to me to view one screen and those in front of me to view simultaneously.  This would resolve this issue while not sacrificing productivity. The only issue I would have is price and battery life. Conceptually, this is the perfect solution for me, however, I would like to see a Transformer like screen detachment :)

I think the mirror functiOn has promise–Carry around a silvererd notebook cover (to protect the screen), and then run the back screen independently, while viewing it on the silvered notebook cover.  I could see it work.  It would appear above the inner screen.

i was SOOOO excited to finally get some hits on my 2-year-old Google alert for a dual screen tablet with pen support . . . until i saw this video and realized that they somehow found a way to eliminate any benefit gained from having two screens by making them mutually exclusive. what a waste.
