Microsoft co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates has been dedicated to ‘enhancing healthcare and reducing extreme poverty’ in his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, for several years now.  Gates pledged to give 95% of his wealth to the foundation (and that’s a lot of money considering he’s the world’s second wealthiest man with a net worth of $63.4 billion), in order to fight diseases in third world countries and improve education and information technology in the US.  Gates’ annual letter from the foundation talks about the progress the organization has made in the past year, as well as the current state of the world and his goals to improve it.  His main goal at the moment is to eradicate polio globally.  Gates writes, “Polio eradication is a top priority for the foundation, a primary focus for me, and a powerful example of the importance of accurate measurement”.  Gates believes that the ...

American multinational computer technology corporation Dell is considering taking the company off the publicly traded stock market, however if Microsoft is going to invest in Dell’s privatisation, Tony Redmond wants to have a say in the company’s future decisions.  However, whilst  this seems to be a reasonable approach for a billion pound investor it seems that dell isn’t too happy with this idea and it appears to be holding up negotiations.  A current arrangement includes almost 16% of founder Michael Dell’s stake in his company, Silver Lake Partners as well as Microsoft with $15 billion worth of debt financing from various banks.  However given the razor thin margins of PC OEM’s, clearly Microsoft is after Dell for more than simply profit, making a measure of control essential.  Wall Street Journal reports that despite these hiccups, the deal is still on track to go through and maybe announce in a matter ...

A new survey by the Ponomon institute has found that consumers are increasingly distrusting Apple and Google and are in fact turning to Microsoft.   According to their survey, neither Apple nor Google are currently ranking among the top 20 most trusted companies in America, while Microsoft has made a new appearance on the ranking; for the first time hitting the number 17 spot.   Apple was ranked 14th last year, and has now dropped off the list; showing an increasing distrust in the company whose autocratic modus operandi is increasingly disturbing consumers and who has been involved in a number of serious tracking issues.  Products such as Apple maps have also not inspired confidence.  Similarly, Google who ranked 10th in 2008, 13th in 2010 and 19th in 2011 has also fallen off the list.  That company of course whole business model is based on invading consumers privacy, thus making the result ...

News on the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 has been on the down low recently, however new details on the date of release of the game have emerged.  As reported by Product-Reviews via email from Microsoft, the game is expected to be released in Spring, on a weekend at the end of March.  The precise date is estimated to be on the 24th March, which falls on a Sunday.  There is some doubt however related to the date.  Nintendo are known to release their most popular games on a Sunday, however GTA 5 is not coming out on the Wii U at the moment, and so it is unlikely that Rockstar will choose to launch the Xbox 360 and PS3 game on a Sunday.  Over gaming sites also appear to be uncertain about the date, but most are also proposing the 24th as the most likely date.  GTA 4 ...

On Thursday 24th January, Microsoft’s CFO Peter Klein said we should expect more distribution channels for the company’s Surface tablet line.  Today, there’s rumours that the Windows RT version of Surface will soon go on sale in Costco stores. Neowin reports that a list displaying Costco stores which require yearly membership will sell the 32 GB version of the tablet (without the touch cover) for $499.  The 32 GB and 64 GB versions of the tablet with the touch cover will be sold for $599 and $699.  Costco will also allow users to choose the colour of their Surface tablet touch cover, rather than being limited to the black touch cover. Now, in total, there are four retail outlets in US that are reported to sell the Surface RT tablet.  Microsoft’s retail stores were the first to offer the tablet at its launch on October 26th 2012, followed by Best ...

Microsoft has released the above nostalgic Internet Explorer ad, which asks users to harken back to the 90’s, to the days of Tamagochi and Hungry Hungry Hippos, and to the days when internet explorer had 90% market share.  Unfortunately I believe Microsoft’s marketers have missed the mark with this ad.  Whilst it takes users back to the ‘good old days’ of ‘the youth’, and to much loved memories, Internet Explorer has never quite made it to that list, and will likely be remembered more as a major security risk than happily and safely browsing the web 1.0.  Better luck with the next ad, Microsoft. While Apple loves to tout the so-called Post-PC era, and even in their recent financials spoke about iPad growth on the strength of them replacing PCs, recent research has found they may not be as well position as they appear. Deloitte denies the claim that we are in the ‘post-PC era’, and that whilst tablet computers have made inroads to traditional PC sales, the only thing that tablets replace is paper, with pilots taking tablets into the cockpit and doctors reviewing medical records on them in hospitals and restaurants as wine menu’s. The 2013 forecast by the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group announced that only tablet computers between 10m and 15m are being used as PC replacements despite companies around the world purchasing 30m tablet computers. There are 500 million enterprise PC’s in use, but only 15 million tablets (3% of the enterprise PC market) and only 5 million of ...

Due to the launch of Windows 8 in late October having a slower start than anticipated, overall PC sales did not show an increase, but in fact showed a drop in the final quarter of 2012 according to IDC and Gartner.  In an interview with Bloomberg, HP Executive Vice President Todd Bradley admitted the fact that Windows 8 had ‘a slower start than many people expected’.  However, he indicated that sales have started to improve for 2013, ‘we see continued momentum and continued growth’ in January.  Adduplex’s online statistics displayed HP PC’s had the most penetration of all the competition, commanding 32% of the over 7,500 types of PC’s that have the Windows 8 operating system.  In the hope of increasing the overall number of PC sales, HP launched a number of new Windows 8-specific PC’s in late October and early November alongside the launch of the OS and the ...

In Summer last year, freelance designer Andrew Kim received a lot of recognition on the internet after posting his take on Microsoft’s Windows 8 logos which the company had unveiled earlier that year.   It turned out that Microsoft were so impressed by Kim’s logos they gave him an official job in which he will be working specifically for a project in the company’s Xbox division.  He will be starting later this summer.  Kim said: But when it came time to make my final decision, I wanted to work at a place I can really get excited about. Working at a company is like getting married, it becomes a fundamental part of your life. I want to work with awesome people on awesome projects that I can get excited about. If you’ve been watching Microsoft over the past year, it’s been exciting, regardless of what your ecosystem preference is. Whilst no ...

‘Super cool’ apple may be losing its grip on the teen demographic, according to bus marketing group, who polled teams as to their object of desire. Apparently apple’s latest i-products are too ubiquitous to be popular amongst the always counter culture teenage group.  Instead they are embracing current niche products such as Microsoft’s surface tablet. ‘Teens are telling us Apple is done,’ Tina Wells of the youth marketing agency Buzz Marketing Group told the website. ‘Apple has done a great job of embracing Gen X and older [Millennials], but I don’t think they are connecting with Millennial kids. [They’re] all about Surface tablets/laptops and Galaxy.’ As the iPhone and iPad increasingly becomes your fathers gadget, Microsoft may benefit from embracing their current role as the underdog. The Xbox Music app is not exactly the best advert for Windows 8, being slow, laggy and low on features. Microsoft has now unveiled version 1.1.144.0 of Xbox Music, which improves access to streaming free music and the transition from a trial subscription to a paid Xbox Music Pass as well as a fix to minimize occasional playback concerns and additional bug fixes which were very prominent in the app before the update.  As well as the obvious fixes, the performance of the Xbox Music app appears to be smoother and more efficient after the update.  To force an update check on the app, launch the Windows Store, then go to settings, then under App Updates you can manually check for the new version of Xbox music.
