In Windows 8 devices, the Start Screen always had the Desktop tile pinned by default. It allowed users to quickly move in and out of desktop mode from the Start screen. However, Microsoft has a different view on this and the Desktop tile is no longer part of the default tiles pinned in the Start Screen of Windows RT 8.1 devices. Users can always pin it again, but I think it is yet another step from Microsoft to move users away from traditional desktop mode. Microsoft provided the following statement regarding this action, “The only desktop apps without modern versions which run on RT are the Office apps: Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In order to streamline access to them, we pinned those apps directly to the first page of Start. Clicking any of these takes you directly to that Desktop app. You can also bring up the switch list ...

When Microsoft announced the 2nd generation Surface device Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, they said that the original Surface RT will remain on sale as a lower end model. However, they confirmed that there will be only one Pro model going forward which is Surface Pro 2. So, the original Surface Pro has got its end of life. In an effort to clearing out its inventories which have older models of Surface Pro, Microsoft today announced a new price cut for the original Surface Pro. Surface Pro 64 GB  – $699 Surface Pro 128GB – $799 Surface Pro 256GB – $999 You can order it here from Microsoft Store. Not a surprise here. Microsoft’s next generation Surface Pro device Surface Pro 2 scored the same Repairability Score as its predecessor. It scored 1 out of 10, while 10 being the easiest to repair. Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) The battery is not soldered to the motherboard—so it can be replaced without soldering, if not without great difficulty. The SSD can be replaced, but not without first risking damage to the tablet simply by opening it. There are over 90 screws inside this device. Mechanical fasteners are great, but frankly, we draw the line at 89. The display assembly consists of a fused glass panel and LCD, and is extremely difficult to remove and replace. Tons of adhesive hold everything in place, including the display and battery. The delicate and arduous opening procedure leaves no room for mistakes: one slip-up, ...

Apple had a media event yesterday in the US where it announced a new wave of updated products across its portfolio. During its presentation, Apple executives compared Microsoft’s strategy with theirs to make their point. I disagree with all three cases they made against Microsoft. Here are they, 1) Apple CEO Tim Cook made the following statement to make the point that they are clearly focused on developing MacOS and MacBooks. “Our competition is different: They’re confused. They chased after netbooks. Now they’re trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows what they’ll do next? I can’t answer that question, but I can tell you that we’re focused.” My take on it: Windows OEMs were focused on selling netbooks because it really sold well. In fact, totally 40 million netbooks were sold in 2008. Netbooks defined the category of companion device which will go along ...

Windows RT 8.1 update is now back in Windows Store. Microsoft released Windows RT 8.1 update for Surface users last week and later pulled it from Windows Store as few users experienced issues while updating. Microsoft was aware of the issue and it was working on a fix for past couple of days. Microsoft provided the following statement on this issue, “This was due to a rare situation where firmware updates had not completed at the time of the update to RT 8.1. In most cases, if a customer encountered this issue the result was simply an extra reboot. However, for a very small percentage, the boot configuration data was affected which prevented a successful boot. We worked to quickly resolve the issue and now encourage customers to update their Surface RT devices. Surface Pro and 8.1 customers were not impacted by this issue.     “As previously announced, there is ...
