Guardian today reported that Microsoft handed the NSA access to unencrypted Skype and Outlook.com messages. It said that Microsoft  collaborated closely with US intelligence services to allow users communications to be intercepted. Microsoft responded to the allegations saying that they comply with US laws. Here is Microsoft’s response, We have clear principles which guide the response across our entire company to government demands for customer information for both law enforcement and national security issues. First, we take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously, so we provide customer data only in response to legal processes. As reported earlier this week, Microsoft is going to reveal the major reorganization plan later today. ATD reports that, top execs have been informed of the changes yesterday and the restructuring is dramatic and will include the wholesale elimination of its operating units for a management structure built around devices and services, both in the consumer and business spaces. There is a petition going on at Change.org to Microsoft about Xbox One. These petitioners need Xbox One with the policies that was announced back at E3, they want to experience the future of entertainment with no compromises. This was to be the future of entertainment. A new wave of gaming where you could buy games digitally, then trade, share or sell those digital licenses. Essentially, it was Steam for Xbox. But consumers were uninformed, and railed against it, and it was taken away because Sony took advantage of consumers uncertainty. We want this back. Both Gartner and IDC yesterday reported about their PC shipment report for Q2 of 2013. The declining trend of the market continues as Gartner reports that worldwide PC shipments dropped to 76 million units in the second quarter of 2013, a 10.9 percent decrease from the same period last year. According to IDC, worldwide PC shipments totaled 75.6 million units in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), down -11.4% compared to the same quarter in 2012 but slightly better than expected. Lenovo emerged as a top PC maker beating HP. It is not surprising given the strong product lineup of Lenovo and weakness of HP’s aging products. At WPC 2013 today, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner announced that they are planning to expand their retail store presence aggressively in the coming months. He revealed that Microsoft is planning to have 101 retail stores in total by this time next year. Microsoft is also going to open their retail stores in China and Kevin said that it is “very very strategic to us, big time.”. Yesterday, we saw an ad from Microsoft which made comparison between Dell XPS Windows RT tablet with Apple iPad exposing the multitasking weakness in iOS platform. Here’s an another ad from Microsoft posted by Tom Warren which compares Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad. This new ad shows the lack of kickstand, Touch Cover and USB drive in Apple iPad. Microsoft today revealed that they have sold more than 20,000 Surface devices at discounted prices at Worldwide Partner Conference 2013. Microsoft is selling the Surface RT + Touch cover combo for just $99 and Surface Pro for just $399 without the Touch cover.   Skype today announced a minor update to Skype for Android app to address some of the feedback they received over the past week. Microsoft released a redesigned Skype application which now has a modern look similar to Windows Phone app. The following changes have been made: You wanted an easier way to sign out. Now you can find this option by hitting the Menu key or on any of these navigation screens: Recent, Favorites, People and Profile. We addressed a bug that was not allowing users to go online or make/receive calls if their status was last set to offline in version 3.2 before upgrading to version 4.0. At Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2013, Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter showed off no.of early prototypes Microsoft tried for Xbox One before settling down with the current design. He said Microsoft “wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it’s all about quality,” and “Using those principles, we started to design.”. The team of about 30 people began with sketches, sent those to an in-house model shop to build prototypes (above) and tested those models in real world environments like “people’s living rooms,” he said. This new ad focuses on multitasking capabilities of Windows RT in Windows RT tablets like Surface RT, Dell XPS 10, etc, and showing that Apple iPad lacks this feature.
