According to ZDNet, similar to the upcoming Windows ‘Blue’ update for Windows 8 OS, Microsoft is working on an update for Office suite codenamed ‘Gemini’. The updates will coming over next two years with the updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, coming this fall.  We may see Metro versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint similar to OneNote and Lync which we have now. According to Mary Jo Foley, Gemini is more than just Metro versions of Office apps, But Gemini is more than just the next, Metrofied version of the core Office apps. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that BUILD 2013 conference is happening in June this year at San Francisco. Microsoft will discuss next generation Windows, Windows Server, Windows Azure and development platforms around Xbox, IE at this year’s conference. According to a report from Digitimes based on its sources from the upstream supply chain, Microsoft has finished the preparation for its integrated development program (IDP) for the upcoming version of Windows. It was also reported that several OEMs including Acer, Asus and Lenovo have joined the project. Acer is also working on a device powered by Nvidia processor. Acer reportedly will also cooperate with Nvidia to develop a device using the new operating system. Instead of having its chip making partners choosing the participants of the IDP, Microsoft decided to pick the candidates itself and has welcomed most first-tier brand vendors to participate in the project. Today, Reuters reported that a Spanish group called Hispalinux  is filing a case against Microsoft for making Windows 8 more secure for consumers. Hispalinux represents 8000 member open-source software users that has made a complaint against Microsoft to the European Commission. Their concern is that Microsoft’s UEFI Secure Boot system in Windows 8 is not allowing them to install Linux distros. Reuters reported the following about their complaint, In its 14-page complaint, Hispalinux said Windows 8 contained an “obstruction mechanism” called UEFI Secure Boot that controls the start-up of the computer and means users must seek keys from Microsoft to install another operating system. The group said it was “a de facto technological jail for computer booting systems … making Microsoft’s Windows platform less neutral than ever”. The new update which is now available in Windows Store has many improvements and bug fixes. Along with the performance improvements, Neowin noted the following features in the update. There’s now a separate volume control for Xbox Music, which allows users to turn down the volume of music playing on your device independently of other system volumes. The app has also received a few more settings, such as the option to have all songs added to Xbox Music available across your devices, as well as the option to add matched songs to your cloud collection. According to Metrostorescanner, a 3rd party site tracking Windows Store apps, Windows Store has now exceeded 50,000 app mark. According to that site, Windows Store has exactly 50,341 apps. Windows Store was opened last October and since then the numbers increased constantly every month to reach this level. For a comparison, Apple AppStore has about 300,000 apps optimized for iPad with all leading app names available on the platform.
