Nasuni today released their report on performance of Cloud Storage Providers. Nasuni tested five clouds: Amazon S3, Microsoft Windows Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, HP Cloud Object Storage, and Rackspace Cloud Files. Microsoft Azure has trumped the last year leader Amazon S3 in various cases. Across the three tests, Windows Azure emerged as a top performer in all categories, and the leader in two out of three: Speed: Azure was 56 percent faster than the No. 2 Amazon S3 in write speed, and 39 percent faster at reading files than the No. 2 HP Cloud Object Storage in read speed. Availability: Azure’s average response time was 25 percent faster than Amazon S3, which had the second fastest average time. Scalability: Amazon S3 varied only 0.6 percent from its average the scaling tests, with Microsoft Windows Azure varying 1.9 percent (both very acceptable levels of variance). Before the release of Windows 8, every few days we used to see new builds and screenshots of Windows 8 internal builds. Microsoft released Windows 8 to the consumer 3 months back and since then there was no concrete information that got leaked about the next version of Windows. Microsoft today made number of announcement regarding Lync and Skype at its first ever Lync conference. Skype SVP Tony Bates gave a keynote talking about the Lync/Skype strategies. Microsoft has now moved Lync team under Tony Bates. Ubuntu today revealed its new OS optimized for tablet. The new tablet OS doesn’t offer any unique new features that are not found on any other OS, instead it directly rips-off most of the platform features in Windows 8. Microsoft today announced that Outlook.com web mail service is moving out of preview. Microsoft revealed the new Outlook.com to replace Hotmail with new UI/UX features last July and now the service has shed off its preview tag. Over 60 million people are actively using the Outlook.com service and Microsoft is planning to upgrade hundreds of millions of Hotmail users to the new Outlook.com interface starting tomorrow and will be completed by this summer. Users can sign up for new @outlook.com addresses or use their existing Gmail or Hotmail address to get started with this service. When Charlie Rose asked about the smartphone industry, Bill Gates admitted that Microsoft didn’t “get out in the lead very early.” “We didn’t miss cell phones, but the way that we went about it didn’t allow us to get the leadership. Microsoft Xbox 360 maintained the leadership rank in the US console market for 25 consecutive months. Xbox 360 sold 281,000 units in January which is impressive for a console which is 7 year old. TeleGeography, a telecom market analysis firm has released a new data on international telephone traffic. According to their report, Skype calls now account for one third of the total international telephone traffic. International telephone traffic grew 5 percent in 2012, to 490 billion minutes. Skype-to-Skype voice and video traffic grew 44 percent in 2012, to 167 billion minutes. Today ifixit posted their tear down of Microsoft Surface for Windows Pro. Microsoft Surface Pro scored a repairability rating of 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair). Here are the reasons iFixit posted at the end of the process, Microsoft Surface Pro Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) The battery is not soldered to the motherboard, so at least no soldering is required to replace it. The SSD is removable — but you risk killing your tablet by trying to open it. There are over 90 screws inside this device. We’re proponents of mechanical fasteners, but this number is a tad crazy. The display assembly (comprising of a fused glass and LCD) is extremely difficult to remove / replace. Tons of adhesive hold everything in place, including the display and battery. At the D: Dive into Media conference, Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi and Nancy Tellem discussed the Xbox entertainment growth and strategy. Yusuf Mehdi announced that in 2012, the amount of TV and other entertainment offerings on Xbox almost tripled, now surpassing 100 custom, voice-controlled TV and entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE. He also revealed some numbers on Xbox 360 console. There are more than 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world and 24 million Kinect sensors sold since launch. There are about 46 million members in Xbox LIVE community. Xbox Users enjoyed more than 18 billion hours of entertainment in 2012.
