Today, Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund cut his Windows 8 sales estimates saying that “Windows 8 is off to an awkward launch,”. He noted that several factors for such launch. First PC OEMs were slow to bring out tablets and ultrabooks based on Windows 8, a steep learning curve is required for consumers to use Windows 8 and the bad press due to confusion between Windows RT and Windows 8. “In looking at Microsoft, we have assumed essentially no growth going forward in traditional PCs (or actually down about 6 [percent] if we exclude new ultrabooks) and the more relevant market growth of about [3 percent to 5 percent] if we include Windows-based tablet devices. Microsoft Bing today announced its holiday campaign that will focus on the evil practices of Google in product search. Bing argues that the difference between search result and ads are shrinking in Google Search results resulting in poor experience for users. You see, Google recently pulled down its “product search service” and replaced it with a “paid listing ads” service. Search for “Canon EOS” in Google Shopping and you receive pages that look like the old days, with “results” down the middle and ads mixed in. But the “results” are also ads. Windows RT, the new version of Windows that runs on ARM processors has started shipping to consumers via new tablets such as Microsoft Surface, Asus VivoTab RT, etc,. So far, Nvidia Tegra is the only ARM processor that Windows RT ships on. Some reviews of the devices like Microsoft Surface pointed out to the performance hiccups in Windows RT. Microsoft today shared some internal numbers regarding Xbox 360 platform sales performance over the Black Friday weekend. Microsoft sold over 750,000 consoles over the weekend in US alone. This number trumps the Nintendo next generation Wii U’s sales number of 400,000 units. Xbox 360 sold more than 750,000 consoles in the U.S. alone –exceeding internal forecasts. Three month Xbox LIVE Gold Subscription sales increased more than 50 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday week. We saw incredible activity on Xbox over the weekend. For example, on Sunday alone we had more than 14 million people on Xbox LIVE across the world, racking up more than 72 million hours of use in just one day. According to research firm Distimo, Windows Store has 3 times as many as downloads in Apple’s Mac App Store which was opened last year. Windows Store already has about 20,000 apps just after a month of its launch. This report also revealed that Apple’s Mac App Store continues to generate five time the revenues on Windows Store as most of the apps are free for now. Microsoft is increasing its user based CALs pricing by over 15%. As opposed to Device CAL, User based CAL allows unlimited device access to the server. Here is the statement from Microsoft on the changes in the pricing, “Microsoft recently notified partners about enterprise Client Access Licenses (CALs) changes so they can inform customers about their options before the changes take effect on December 1, 2012. These CAL changes include a user-based option that offers more value in support across unlimited devices and simplifies licensing management and compliance as devices in the workplace proliferate.
