Few days back, WMPoweruser reported about a mysterious ZTE Windows Phone device with 5.9inch screen. Many doubted whether Windows Phone 8 can scale to such high resolutions with app compatibility. Now, we have another rumor from @MS_Nerd about this matter. It seems Microsoft is working on two fronts in bringing Windows based device with screen sizes ranging from 5-inch to less than 10-inch. These 7-inch device is expected to have stylus support and include IE and Reader as well. @MS_Nerd: ZTE Blade 8: WP8 counts 3 pixels as 2. MSFT adding stylus support in OneNote, IE & Reader. We all know that Office for iOS and Android devices is coming next year, but Microsoft didn’t provide any details on it. Today, The Verge posted the above screenshots showing Microsoft Office experience on iOS device. Office Mobile for iOS and Android will come as free apps that allows you to view Microsoft Office documents. If you need edit functionality, you can enable it with an Office 365 subscription. Research firm Gartner yesterday released a report on consumerization of IT. Gartner predicted that 821 million smart devices (smartphones and tablets) will be purchased worldwide in 2012 and it will reach billion mark in 2013. Gartner said the following regarding Windows 8 in businesses by 2016, In the business market, Windows 8 will take the No. 3 position in the tablet market behind Apple and Android by 2016, with interest coming more from businesses than consumers. Tablets and convertibles will be the way into businesses for Windows 8. Gartner estimates that the share of Windows 8 tablets and ultramobiles in businesses will reach 39 percent in 2016. Offline access will be supported in Internet Explorer 10, Safari 5 or greater and Google Chrome browsers. The following content will be available offline, Mail Users will be able to see all their folders, and content in all offline-supported folders. Offline-supported folders include: Inbox Drafts Any folder viewed from the browser in the last week For each offline-supported folder, users will have 3 days of content or 150 items, whichever is larger. Microsoft today confirmed that Skype will replace Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available). In order to focus the development efforts and create seamless experiences, Microsoft will be doing this operation. Last June, we reported about a specs of a device from Microsoft called Xbox Surface.  We thought it was just a fan made concept, but it seems that it may get real soon. According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft is working on  a 7-inch version of Xbox Surface tablet which will be focused on gaming. While the specs of the device was not yet finalized,  it will  likely include a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM suitable for high performance gaming. According to research firm IHS, Microsoft Surface 32GB costs $271 to build it and TouchCover costs just $16 to build. Microsoft Surface’s main components include a Tegra 3 processor chip from Nvidia, and a display and memory chips from Samsung. Samsung appears to be having a healthy profit from Surface by supplying display, the memory chips and the battery, pocketing about $137 (almost half of total Surface cost). As every other OEM do, Microsoft seems to be profiting more from the TouchCover keyboard accessory. TouchCover includes chips from Atmel and Freescale Semiconductor and since it’s a compelling accessory for users, Microsoft is trying to squeeze more profit margin from it. Everyone knows that Windows RT is more secure than Windows 8 because of its closed nature and the app model surrounding it. Even though one cannot install unverified apps on Windows RT machines, already installed apps should be protected from hackers, etc. Recently, a Windows Phone Developer posted the above picture showing how he can hack a Windows RT game code to increase the gold coin numbers in the game. This may not sound serious to you, but the same amount of gold coins costs about $100 on Android! The above file was in IsoStore of the game and it was even encrypted. Even though signing/verifying the data should be taken care by app itself, I think Windows RT should provide more tamper-proof application storage solution for developers as individual developers themselves can’t do all these.
