Google has joined Asana, Canon, Dropbox, Newegg and SAP to announce the formation of the License on Transfer (LOT) Network, a cooperative patent-licensing agreement that is expected to cut down on patent troll litigation. The agreement is simple, patents of LOT network member companies cannot be used to sue other LOT network member companies even after patent transfer to other companies. The LOT agreement is a new kind of royalty-free cross-license meant to address these growing systemic problems. Member companies receive a license when the patents are transferred out of the LOT group. That means that companies retain their right to enforce a patent so long as they retain ownership of it. However, as soon as it is sold, a license to the other members becomes effective, protecting them from attacks by the troll to which the patent was sold. Gartner today released their Worldwide PC shipments report which revealed that total shipments were 75.8 million units in the second quarter of 2014, a 0.1 percent increase from the second quarter of 2013. This should be a good news for OEMs as PC shipments have increased after eight quarters of declining shipments. This is due to the stabilization in developed markets was offset by a decline in emerging markets. “The PC market’s installed based has been declining as buyers switched to tablets and smartphones for entertainment and social media consumption. The 2Q14 results suggest that the consumer installed base restructuring peaked during 2013. We are seeing a slowdown in premium tablet sales, which have already penetrated a large number of households. Microsoft seized 22 domain names from dynamic DNS provider No-IP as those domains were being abused in malware-related crimes against Windows users. With a special order from federal court, Microsoft became the domain IP resolver for the No-IP domains. In this process, millions of innocent users got affected due to domain issues that happened due to Microsoft’s actions. No-IP blamed Microsoft for inconvenience caused to its customers. Gearbox Software, the developers behind Borderlands series is creating a new multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game called Battleborn. Gearbox describes Battleborn as a “hero-shooter,” it is a mixture of first-person arena gameplay, and the fast-paced minion-destroying mechanics that the MOBA genre is known for. “As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, cooperative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. Last year, Microsoft announced that all Xbox One retail units can be used as dev kits in the future so that anyone can become a Xbox developer. During ID@Xbox program launch, Microsoft said, “As part of our vision for enabling everyone with an Xbox One to be a creator, we absolutely intend to enable people to develop games using their retail kits. Great news for Microsoft Flight Simulator fans. Microsoft has licensed Flight Simulator franchise to Dovetail Games, creator of the Train Simulator franchise. Dovetail games will now develop games for this franchise and the first game is expected to be released in 2015. Dovetail will also bring 2006’s Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition to Steam. This will include all of the content from the Deluxe Edition and the Acceleration expansion pack and will release later this year. ACES Studio, which was responsible for the Flight Simulator franchise inside Microsoft was shut down by Microsoft during its layoffs in 2009. David Pann, general manager for Microsoft’s Search Network today blogged about the performance of Microsoft Bing Ads and their future. Microsoft revealed that clicks on Bing ads are up 30% from a year ago, and mobile ad clicks jumped 133%. Microsoft cited no.of new features they added over the past few months such as the new Call Extensions, product ads and new ad formats.
