When it comes to productivity, Microsoft Office is the de-facto standard. Google is trying to fight it out with Google Apps including Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides for past few years. One of the main disadvantages of using these apps is that it didn’t allow native Office file editing, you have to convert to Google document format to do editing. Google today announced that they are bringing native file editing to Google Apps, thanks to QuickOffice acquisition. Microsoft today announced a great news for Office developers. They are open sourcing the Open XML SDK on GitHub. Microsoft is looking forward to work with community to make improvements to the SDK’s functionality and scalability. Microsoft today announced updates to OneDrive apps for iOS and Android devices. In Android devices, OneDrive will now automatically upload your videos by default. Also they have updated the UI to make it feel more native to Android. It comes with an in-app navigation drawer that works just how you expect it to. Microsoft announced partnership with Barnes and Noble back in 2012 and even created a new joint venture company called Nook Media LLC. Since then, the only thing that came of out partnership was Barnes & Noble’s Windows 8 app. Recently it was rumored that B&N has stopped developing apps for Windows platform since Microsoft is developing its own Xbox branded reader with content powered by Barnes & Noble in the backend. Microsoft today lauded the efforts by Singapore’s Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) for announcing a regulatory framework for unlicensed access to unused radio spectrum in the broadcast TV frequency bands, known as TV white spaces (TVWS). As the usage of mobile devices and wireless data usage increases, we are in need of more spectrum bandwidth. Microsoft today announced that they partnering with Redox Power Systems LLC, the University of Maryland and Trans-Tech Inc. to develop a very efficient, low-cost fuel cell system. Microsoft and its partners were recently awarded $5 million by the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) to develop transformational fuel cells. This research is being funded through the Reliable Electricity Based on Electrochemical Systems (REBELS) program, which seeks to encourage innovation around distributed stationary power generation by introducing technology concepts that have the potential for significantly lower costs and higher performance than existing distributed generation technologies.
