Google today released 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows users. The two brand new 64-bit Dev and Canary channels for Windows 7 and 8 users, giving a faster and more secure browsing experience. It includes several improvements in speed, security and stability: Speed: 64-bit allows us to take advantage of the latest processor and compiler optimizations, a more modern instruction set, and a calling convention that allows more function parameters to be passed quickly by registers. As a result, speed is improved, especially in graphics and multimedia content, where we see an average 25% improvement in performance. Security: With Chrome able to take advantage of the latest OS features such as High Entropy ASLR on Windows 8, security is improved on 64-bit platforms as well. At COMPUTEX, Intel revealed more information about their next gen Core product codenamed Broadwell. It will be the first 14-nanometer chip from Intel. To demonstrate it, Intel revealed the world’s first 14nm fanless mobile PC reference design from Intel is a 12.5 inch screen that is 7.2mm thin with keyboard detached and weighs 670 grams. Last year, Microsoft became the default search provider for Siri in the iOS7. This year with the release of iOS8 and the OSX Yosemite, Microsoft Bing becomes the default search provider for the new Spotlight feature. During WWDC keynote demo, Apple demoed this feature as well. I guess Microsoft should be pretty confident on their E3 announcements. Because, they are continuing to make major announcements every other week despite the fact that E3 event is just a week away. Microsoft today revealed that their next installment in their flagship racing series Forza Horizon 2 is in development for Xbox One and Xbox 360 and due for release this fall. Previously, Forza Horizon was released for Xbox 360 and Forza Motorsport 5 for Xbox One. This Forza Horizon 2 will be available on both the platforms and it is being developed by Horizon 1 studio Playground Games collaborating closely with the Motorsport team at Turn 10 Studios. At Build, Microsoft announced that they are bringing back Start Menu to Windows 8.1. Currently, you have a Start Button there and when you click it, you are presented with the Start Screen. The upcoming Start Menu will look like the above with the combination of Live Tiles and program shortcuts as seen above. It was expected to be coming via update to Windows 8.1 in late 2014. But today, Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft has changed their plans and this new Start Menu will not be released to the public in Windows 8.1 Update 2 in 2014. Microsoft’s operating systems group has decided to hold off on delivering a Microsoft-developed Start Menu until Threshold, the next “major” release of Windows. Microsoft today announced that they have hired former Yahoo and Google executive Preston McAfee as their new chief economist. Preston, was most recently director of Google strategic technologies and previously Vice President and Research Fellow at Yahoo. In his new role at Microsoft, Preston McAfee will be responsible for leading a team of economists who will work closely with Amy Hood, chief financial officer, and business and engineering groups across the company on developing new business models and metrics, designing marketplaces for advertising and apps, assisting with government relations and policy, and developing an economic strategy for the company.
