Both Gartner and IDC yesterday reported about their PC shipment report for Q2 of 2013. The declining trend of the market continues as Gartner reports that worldwide PC shipments dropped to 76 million units in the second quarter of 2013, a 10.9 percent decrease from the same period last year. According to IDC, worldwide PC shipments totaled 75.6 million units in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), down -11.4% compared to the same quarter in 2012 but slightly better than expected. Lenovo emerged as a top PC maker beating HP. It is not surprising given the strong product lineup of Lenovo and weakness of HP’s aging products. At WPC 2013 today, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner announced that they are planning to expand their retail store presence aggressively in the coming months. He revealed that Microsoft is planning to have 101 retail stores in total by this time next year. Microsoft is also going to open their retail stores in China and Kevin said that it is “very very strategic to us, big time.”. Yesterday, we saw an ad from Microsoft which made comparison between Dell XPS Windows RT tablet with Apple iPad exposing the multitasking weakness in iOS platform. Here’s an another ad from Microsoft posted by Tom Warren which compares Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad. This new ad shows the lack of kickstand, Touch Cover and USB drive in Apple iPad. Microsoft today revealed that they have sold more than 20,000 Surface devices at discounted prices at Worldwide Partner Conference 2013. Microsoft is selling the Surface RT + Touch cover combo for just $99 and Surface Pro for just $399 without the Touch cover.   Skype today announced a minor update to Skype for Android app to address some of the feedback they received over the past week. Microsoft released a redesigned Skype application which now has a modern look similar to Windows Phone app. The following changes have been made: You wanted an easier way to sign out. Now you can find this option by hitting the Menu key or on any of these navigation screens: Recent, Favorites, People and Profile. We addressed a bug that was not allowing users to go online or make/receive calls if their status was last set to offline in version 3.2 before upgrading to version 4.0. At Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2013, Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter showed off no.of early prototypes Microsoft tried for Xbox One before settling down with the current design. He said Microsoft “wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it’s all about quality,” and ”Using those principles, we started to design.”. The team of about 30 people began with sketches, sent those to an in-house model shop to build prototypes (above) and tested those models in real world environments like “people’s living rooms,” he said. Microsoft has released their first set of updates for Windows RT 8.1 preview as part of Patch Tuesday updates. As we reported few hours back, Surface RT also got an system firmware update that improves performance and reliability of the machine. Microsoft today announced a new security policy for 3rd party apps in Windows Store, Windows Phone Store and Office Store. According to this policy, the developer should submit an updated app which fixes the publicly reported security vulnerability within 180 days. Today we are announcing a new policy for how we’ll handle vulnerabilities in apps available through the Windows Store, Windows Phone Store, Office Store, and Azure Marketplace. As with second Tuesday, we’re doing this to help protect customers and to ensure the apps available in our stores are as secure as possible. Starting today, developers will be required to submit an updated app within 180 days of being notified of a Critical or Important severity security issue. Power BI for Office 365 is a cloud-based business intelligence (BI) solution that enables customers to easily gain insights from their data, working within Excel to analyze and visualize the data in a self-service way. Power BI for Office 365 includes the following, Power Query, enabling customers to easily search and access public data and their organization’s data, all within Excel (formerly known as “Data Explorer“).
