Windows now supports different screen sizes, input methods, connectivity needs, and usage scenarios, but Microsoft wants it to run beautifully on hardware made by partners around the world. With Windows 8, there’s no doubt that we made a big bet and took a first step toward that future. We bet on touch and on mobility in a big way, and included a fresh take on what a touch-based interface could be for customers. In the past few weeks, we saw no.of Windows 8.1 Update 1 builds leaked on the web. Today, a new Windows 8.1 Update 1 build got leaked which seems to be a new SKU from Microsoft. This Windows 8.1 build: 9600.17024.winblue_gdr_s14sku_partner.140214-1700 is named Windows 8.1 with Bing. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has started integrating Bing directly into the OS which might raise anti-trust issues in EU. My guess is that this new SKU is targeted towards EU where Microsoft might be selling Windows 8.1 with Bing instead of just Windows 8.1 branding. Microsoft has not yet officially confirmed this new offering, we will have to wait and see to know more about it. Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft is cutting the price of Windows 8.1 OS license to OEMs by 70% for low-cost PCs and tablets. This new discount program is one of the main effort Microsoft is taking to rival the adoption of Google’s Chromebooks and Android devices. Windows 8.1 license generally costs $50 for OEMs, but Microsoft pays them marketing incentives every year which would bring the effective Windows 8.1 license cost around $30-$40. According to this new report, OEMs will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and preinstall it on devices that retail for less than $250. This new pricing scheme will apply only for the products that meet the price limit, with no restrictions on the size or type of device. Microsoft, which named Satya Nadella as CEO earlier this month, is seeking to speed up development and introduction of new devices. It won’t require products that use the cheaper licensing to complete logo certification, ...

A recent patent filing from Microsoft reveals a new switchable magnetic lock mechanism that could be used in smartphones, laptops and others. Find the excerpt from the patent below. Current solution followed by various OEMs: Many computing devices have movable and removable parts and peripherals. A smart phone may include a stylus. a laptop a hinged display. a tablet computer a battery charger. or a portable audio player a docking station, to name just a few. Current techniques often fix these parts and peripherals to their computing devices using mechanic connectors, such as latches, sliding tabs, and so forth. These mechanical connectors, however, often fail to provide a satisfactory design because they have objects that jut out or holes that pierce the computer body, part, or peripheral. Examples include exposed latches, latch holes, tabs hooks, and tab reception detents, to name just a few. Some techniques have attempted to address this ...
