The Baidu Charitable Foundation and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (The Gates Foundation) founded a strategic charitable alliance on Saturday, in a bid to work for a healthy, smoke-free environment both in China and around the world. Bill Gates joined forces with Robin Li, CEO of China’s answer to Google-Baidu during his second trip to China, to form a charitable organisation which will help people to quit smoking. Li received a link analysis patent in 1996 which would eventually make him one of China’s richest citizens and has said Gates had always been a role model to him even before he began Baidu. He pledged that they will increase smokers’ awareness of the dangers of active and passive smoking. Canadian company i4i has claimed that a version of Microsoft Word infringed a patented method for editing documents. The patent row which started in 2007 and has gone to the highest court in the U.S. has finally been decided on in a ruling handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday. The court unanimously upheld 30 years of patent law by siding with i4i, which said it would invest the new money back into the company. Microsoft has also been ordered to recall from stores any remaining copies of Word that used the patent. The Supreme Court fined Microsoft $290 million, which they will have to pay within 15 days.
