Microsoft last week announced that they are releasing an updated Xbox One SDK for developers this month which will give developers access to more GPU bandwidth, so enabling more performance for their games. Also there are new tools and flexibility to make games better. During the launch of Xbox One, Microsoft said that they are reserving about 10% of the GPU for Kinect and other system process. But this update for SDK is making it possible for developers to access additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions. Last night, in a podcast with Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Phil Spencer confirmed that Bungie’s Destiny will have increased resolution because of this update.
“Even our friends at Bungie, and I’ve been spending a lot of time down there, they’re going to pick up the June SDK update for Destiny, and they’re going to up the resolution of Destiny based on this change,” Spencer said. “So I think it’s just a great time for us.”
Also in Sunset OverDrive, this increased GPU will “make a more vibrant and alive gameplay space.” He said that it’s all about choice, “This was a time when we wanted to give developers a choice on how much of the reserve, the Kinect reserve, they wanted to leave in the system”.
