Major updates for Windows 8 apps were released last month, including updates for the Finance app via the Windows Store which include enhancements and improvements in network connectivity and navigation improvements as well as new stock exchanges and news content partners.  An update for the News app has also occurred, showing improvements in mouse and keyboard navigation for Windows 8 users as well as more support for regional news sources and additional news outlets and various performance improvements.  However, the News and Finance apps remain unavailable in some areas, something which will hopefully be addressed in the next major update.   Via: Neowin.net ...

The Videolan team have posted an update on their KickStarter page after their fundraiser hit 90% of their £40,000 target with 7 days still to go. Standing at £36,615 at the time of writing, the team explained their plan to port VLC from Windows 8 Desktop to Windows 8 Metro, needed because the Windows ecosystem was moving in that direction, required portions of their code to be rewritten to meet Windows Metro ideals of responsiveness and the ability to wake and sleep as needed. Microsoft is pushing out an update for the Mail, Calendar and Messaging apps in Windows 8. The changelog notes the following improvements: Group email messages by conversation to keep your inbox organised. Respond to meeting invitations directly from your inbox. Get things done more quickly with faster performance in all apps. Experience better reliability and usability based on feedback from customers like you. My experience with the mail app so far has not been great, with limited features and the app completely unable to send email from my main mail account, no matter how I tweak the settings. The good news is that the email does now actually work.  The bad news is that all the mail that was stuck in my outbox has now suddenly been sent The mail app does overall also feel much faster.
