Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft is in “advanced talks” to invest in location based startup Foursquare. Bloomberg said that Microsoft is vying to take an equity stake in Foursquare Labs. Microsoft may make this investment in Foursqaure similar to what they did with Facebook in 2007. A small investment in this location startup might give them access to data of over billions of check-ins. Microsoft may integrate Foursqaure data into products like Bing, Local Scout, etc, to provide more robust location data to users. Foursquare recently revealed few new features that will engage more users into their platform, The updates included a feature that lets people check their friends into locations in addition to themselves. It will have the following advantages, The new Bing for Schools program will offer daily lesson plans designed to teach search skills Bing Rewards enhancements to help earn Microsoft Surface RT tablets for schools, and, for schools admitted to the pilot program, a tailored Bing search experience for K-12 students when on the school network. Schools participating in the search pilot will receive ad-free Bing search, strict filtering to help block adult content, and augmented privacy protections. Microsoft today announced the new  Bing’s Hometown Homepage Photo Contest. People have to submit one of their own photos that highlights and capture the beauty of their hometown to the new Bing Homepage App on Facebook between today (August 19) and September 3.  It can be a special landmark, view-point or natural wonder that captures the essence of a town. On September 10, we’ll announce the top ten finalists and fans will be able to vote for their favorite on Facebook. The image with the most votes will be declared the winning picture and will be showcased on the Bing homepage (along with the talented photographer) on October 1. Microsoft’s Bing in UK has introduced a new way to reduce child abuse on the internet. Bing will show pop-up warnings on sites containing images of child abuse. When you do a search on child abuse, the Bing Notification Platform will inform you that the content you are trying to access is illegal with details of a counselling service. And when the user tries to access not so good images of children, they will be presented with a warning based on input compiled by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. “If someone in the UK tries to use search terms on Bing which can only indicate they are looking for illegal child abuse content, they will activate the Bing Notification Platform which will produce an on-screen notification telling them that child abuse content is illegal. At BUILD conference held last week, Microsoft announced that Bing Maps 3D is coming back along with the release of Windows 8.1. They even gave a brief demo of the same. 3D Maps is not new to Bing Maps as they had in the name of Virtual Maps 3D few years back before discontinuing it in 2010. Liveside today reported that the new upcoming version of Bing Maps 3D will be enabled by WebGL in IE11. So, users won’t be needed to install any plug-ins to experience the 3D maps. And also they are building Photosynth 2 viewer based on WebGL.
