Yesterday Bing team announced a new feature for Bing web search called Bing Action Buttons. When you search across 7 popular categories – including airlines, couriers (e.g. FedEx), restaurants, banks, rental cars, software downloads and hotels – you will be presented with buttons for top actions on the site, that directly take you to the page where you can complete your task. Google is defending themselves in front of the US Senate, and of course is trying to diffuse accusations that they are a monopoly by claiming their competitors are a bit more competitive than they really are. Google’s Eric Schmidt’s opening comments should therefore be taken with a pinch of salt when he said: Among major search engines, Microsoft’s Bing has continued to gain in popularity, perhaps because it comes pre-installed as the search default on over 70 percent of new computers sold. Similar to top image search trends, Bing has a page for top search trends. Bing Trends page allows you to visually explore the top search trends in Bing on the current day and even for the 5 previous days from the current day. Again this feature may be new or old, available/unavailable to some countries (It works in US for sure).  On the other note, I think Bing should globalize their product soon to counter Google effectively. According to reports from Businessweek, Microsoft has filed a complaint against Google to FTC regarding unfair advertising rates. Google is already under scanner by senate regarding unfair business practices and adding Microsoft’s complaint will further make the case stronger against Google. Microsoft’s complaint as follows, Microsoft first complained in September 2007 that Google drastically raised the rate for an ad for Windows Live, a predecessor to Microsoft’s Bing search engine, one of the main rivals to Google’s Internet search, according to the person familiar with the matter. The cost increased to $5 per mouse click from 10 cents a click for placing a Windows Live ad next to search results for the word “hotmail,” Microsoft’s e-mail product, according to the person. Microsoft is investing and partnering with Adchemy, an advertising technology company. Techcrunch today reported that Microsoft has joined August Capital and the Mayfield Fund to invest $61 million in Adchemy series-E funding. Along with investment, Microsoft is also extending its partnership with Adchemy to provide ad technology to its Microsoft adCenter customers. Adchemy’s IntentMap technology allows advertisers improve their paid search campaigns and expand keyword coverage by using consumer intent instead of individual keywords. At a Analyst Meeting currently ongoing Microsoft has illustrated its increasing reach in the US Search market with the above slide, which I think illustrates the accelerating gains there pretty well. As Microsoft’s market share grows there develops a virtuous circle where their search results improve due to more data and their income grows as advertisers are more likely to look beyond Google, drawing in more users and making the venture more sustainable. comScore have released their search market share  report today. Microsoft powered search continues to trend upwards while Google powered search slips. Both Bing and Yahoo increased their search market share while Google lost some points. From comScore, Month of August: U.S. explicit core search was up 9% y/y for the month of August a deceleration from +10% y/y in July. Google search was up 8.1%, Yahoo! up 2% and Microsoft up 44%. September Quarter (Quarter over Quarter) Pacing: We examine how the search quarter is pacing after the second month of the quarter. We define pacing as taking the reported period (month of July and August) and dividing it by the monthly average of the previous quarter. Experian Hitwise have released their monthly stats for search market share in the USA, and the data continues to show an erosion of Google’s market share and growth in Bing-powered searches. In the 30 days July to August 2011 Bing and Yahoo search combined added nearly 1%, from 28.05 to 28.99, while Google dived around the same amount, from 66.05 to 65.09% of the market. Year on year the numbers are even more stark, with Google dropping from 71.59 to 65.09 percent, down 6.5%, while Bing-powered search increased 4.4% to 28.99 over the same period. While Google still has an overwhelming market share in the high 90% overseas, they make around 45% of their $30 billion plus revenue in USA, making each percentage lost by Google worth around $250 million. Bing is currently testing a HTML5 Web app, and we can access it too. But the app is not completed, so its broken in many places, also it gives you an idea of how the app will be. Michael Gillett from MML have posted the above images showing search results and home page of new web app under testing. The app seems to be more optimized for touch, Windows 8 may be the reason behind it. Yahoo’s CEO Carol Bartz, has apparently just been fired , with CFO Tim Morse being installed temporarily in her place. The turmoil at the top may signify a change in strategy from the company, and while they still maintain they are looking for “organic growth” an insider has claimed “Yahoo is open to selling itself to the right bidder” according to TNW. Microsoft famously attempted to purchase Yahoo for $ 44.6 billion in 2008.  The company is currently trading for close to a third of the value to a market cap of $16 billion, and while Microsoft may once again by interested, I suspect on this occasion the only segment they would be interested in would be the search business, rather than the whole company. Bing has started to roll out its new Metro-fied HTML5-enabled version, with users reporting the typical Windows Phone-like search buttons, smoother page transitions that fade in and out  and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently floating at the top of the page. BingWatch, who obviously keeps a close eye on these things, reports the following changes: Text links to all eight sections include “Images,” “Videos,” “Shopping,” and others are now being moved to the top navigation bar.  The Facebook icon and the number of “Like” also moved up a little bit.  The new homepage also spotted with a larger font size for today’s hot topics "Popular now" at the bottom of the page. Microsoft has succeeded where Google failed, by renewing their data sharing deal with Twitter, something which Google recently failed with, terminating their Realtime search feature in the process. The renewal was revealed in a cutesy conversation on twitter between the official Bing and Twitter accounts, as recorded by The Next Web. With Google now in direct competition with both Facebook and Twitter with Google Plus, it is likely Microsoft will have much greater access to social networking data from these other companies to improve the attractiveness and accuracy of their own search engine, already pretty accurate but with a low user base. As rumored months ago, today Microsoft and Baidu announced their partnership on web search service. As a result of the partnership, Bing will power the English language search queries on Baidu.
