Today, Thailand’s Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) announced a large scale cloud education partnership with Microsoft. As part of this partnership, they are going to provide 8 million students and 400,000 teachers throughout the country with free access to the Microsoft Office 365 for Education. This initiative will allow students and teachers throughout Thailand to create, connect and collaborate on a safe and secure platform. Microsoft claims that this is the largest cloud education initiative ever, and one that promises to foster sustainable growth and raise Thailand’s overall standard of living for generations to come. The annual Information Sector report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) was released today. In general, customers are more satisfied with the with telecommunication services and technologies than they were a year ago. But, the customer satisfaction with computer software for desktops and laptops continues to fall. Microsoft and the aggregate of smaller software makers both backslide 1% to 74 and 76, respectively. Customer satisfaction with computer software manufactured for desktops and laptops stabilizes at an ACSI score of 76. The aggregate of small software makers including Intuit (TurboTax), Adobe (Acrobat), and multiple antivirus programs takes a slight 1% gain to 77. Likewise. Microsoft, the largest individual software manufacturer, experiences an incremental gain to 75. These upticks, however, are not enough to Impact the industry as a whole. On the second Tuesday of each month, Microsoft releases updates for Windows and other products like Office through Windows Update (WU), Microsoft Update (MU), and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This is often referred to as “Update Tuesday” or “Patch Tuesday”. Windows Intune is a cloud service from Microsoft that allows Enterprise to manage the devices of their employees with ease. Microsoft is updating Intune updated on a regular basis, roughly every quarter. The previously announced Windows Intune features are now rolling out. It includes support for Windows Phone 8.1 and Samsung KNOX Standard (formerly Samsung SAFE) support. At TechEd conference held yesterday, Microsoft revealed the upcoming features for Windows Intune in Q4 of CY2014. At TechEd conference today, General manager of Microsoft’s Office Division Julia White announced that Office for iPad Apps has been downloaded about 27 million times since its launch. Microsoft released Office for iPad apps just six weeks ago, and it is turning out to be a runaway success. Microsoft previously announced that Office for iPad apps saw 12 million downloads in the first week after the launch, and since then the numbers have been doubled. Microsoft today released a preview of Visual Studio tooling support for Apache Cordova. This will help developers build multi-device hybrid mobile applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, targeting a broad range of mobile devices. Apache Cordova is a popular open source platform for creating such platform. Microsoft Open Technologies has contributed in making Cordova tools for Visual Studio. The web developers can use their existing skills in HTML and JavaScript to create hybrid packaged apps for multiple devices while taking advantage of each device’s capabilities. Amazon is still the cloud infrastructure business leader with 27% market share which is more than all the next 5 five competitors combined. Microsoft today announced new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365 users. Power View performs advanced statistical analysis of the data in your line charts to generate forecasts that incorporate trends and seasonal factors. So how does forecasting work? Forecasting in Power View is based on an established suite of methods for time series prediction called exponential smoothing. Over the years many methods have been developed for the analysis of time series, depending on whether the data is strongly seasonal or has no seasonality, how much noise there is in the data, and whether the data contains “surprises” or irregular peaks.
