  Israeli news site Calcalist today reported that Apple has bought PrimeSense, the technology that powered the original Kinect released by Microsoft. During the release of original Kinect, Microsoft said the following on PrimeSense, “PrimeSense has delivered an important component to the technology, helping us deliver revolutionary controller-free entertainment experiences in the living room.” However, the current Xbox One Kinect is fully engineered by Microsoft. PrimeSense is the leader in 3D sensors and it already powers over dozen of natural interaction products in the market. They claim that their technology is already powering more than 24 million devices around the world. According the report, Apple bought PrimeSense for over $345 million which I think is a great deal. If Apple is planning for a media console, PrimeSense could become the technology powering it.   Microsoft has added Blu-ray disc support in Xbox One, but that doesn’t mean that Microsoft will also support 3D Blu-ray playback. Microsoft has confirmed to CNET that Xbox One won’t support 3D Blu-ray playback at launch. When I first read this news, I was like, “Does it really matter?”. First of all, there are very few 3D Blu-ray content available right now and it can be played only on a appropriate 3D TV setup. However, people with lots of 3D Blu-ray content would be disappointed at this news. We are just a month away from Xbox One launch. We are yet to get all the details about it as Microsoft is revealing them every week as we move towards the launch date. A leaked user manual of Xbox One Kinect has revealed the minimum distance requirement to use the sensor. The new minimum distance requirement is just 1.4 meters (over 4.5-feet) which is significantly lower than the previous version of Kinect. Even though Microsoft has talked about literally everything on Xbox One, from its design decisions to marketing stuff, we are yet to know about the apps running on Xbox One. Xbox One is a powerful gaming PC that runs 3 operating systems simultaneously. One of these operating systems is based on the Windows NT kernel and will help runs apps such as Netflix, Skype, YouTube, Twitter, etc.  The second is dedicated solely to games.  The third is the OS is the most important and allows the other two OSes to communicate with each other and it also allows for the fast switching between game mode and app mode. Microsoft today discussed about the much garnered Xbox Live Compute feature on Xbox One. The Xbox Live Cloud service is specifically designed to enable game creators to utilize the scalable computing resources that Microsoft deploys within their regional datacenters. This compute resources will allow game developers to enhance their game experiences beyond what is generally possible with the limited resources of a console.   Microsoft has managed the pull another 180 with a requirement change related to Kinect and Xbox One. Xbox One console will be able to function without Kinect sensor plugged in. Xbox One Chief Platform Architect Marc Whitten revealed this during a Q&A at IGN. Whitten said that “like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly used the sensor.” For privacy conscious consumers, Whitten revealed that you can turn the sensor off in the Xbox One’s system settings. “When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information,” Whitten said, adding that it’s still in use for IR blasting in this configuration. Microsoft is already selling Xbox hardware console at discounted prices by bundling up with yearly Xbox LIVE gold subscriptions in US. According to the recent reports from MCV UK, Microsoft is planning to sell Xbox One at discounted prices by bundling them with Sky TV subscriptions in UK. Sources familiar with the situation tell us that Microsoft is in talks with the broadcaster to sell Xbox One with Sky subscriptions. Microsoft today announced that next generation Kinect for Windows is coming next year. The new Kinect is capable for recording 1080p videos with advanced CMOS sensors that can record color images upto 30fps. A new Kinect for Windows sensor and software development kit (SDK) are coming next year followed by the release of Kinect sensor with Xbox One later this year. Dr. Ram Ramamoorthy, Assistant Professor, who heads the Robust Autonomy & Decisions Lab at the School of Informatics in The University of Edinburgh has developed a Humanoid robot which can play “Rock-scissors-paper” game using Artificial Intelligence. Reports suggests that it will take on humans and can make out the opponent’s strategies as it plays. As reported by TOI, Rock-scissors-paper is a hand game usually played by two people, where players simultaneously form one of three shapes with an outstretched hand. The rock beats scissors, the scissors beat paper and the paper beats rock. If both players throw the same shape, the game is tied.
