Microsoft’s current CEO Steve Ballmer got only 79% of his total eligible bonus set for him by the board due to the slow growth in Windows 8 and Surface RT write off. The information was revealed in the proxy statement filed by Microsoft yesterday. The fiscal 2013 proxy statement gave the following reason on Ballmer’s bonus: “The company faced challenges due to weakness in the consumer PC market. While the launch of Windows 8 in October 2012 resulted in over 100 million licenses sold, the challenging PC market coupled with the significant product launch costs for Windows 8 and Surface resulted in an 18% decline in Windows Division operating income. Slower than anticipated sales of Surface RT devices and the decision to reduce prices to accelerate sales resulted in a $900 million inventory charge.” Steve Ballmer received a total of $1.26 million in fiscal 2013 which includes a base salary ...

Microsoft had a long tradition of delivering pre-show keynote at CES. Surprisingly, Microsoft last year said that it is not taking part in the CES with the following reason, We’ll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won’t have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing. It seems Microsoft has reversed their decision and returning to CES again this year. BBC reported today that Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association revealed this information at London. “Microsoft is officially back in the International CES,” “They are taking out significant space in meeting rooms – it’s actually a larger presence than I believe they have ever had. “Microsoft will have to make the decision who the rooms are open ...

When Windows 8 was launched last year by Microsoft, there were very few touch PCs in retail for customers to try and buy. Also the sales of non-touch devices lead to poor customer adoption of Windows 8’s modern UI and Windows Store. Microsoft and Intel are now looking to change the situation this holiday season with number of touch based and 2in1 Windows 8 form factors hitting the market. At IDF, Intel executive Kirk Skaugen revealed that 70% of the current Ultrabooks on sale are touch enabled. And Intel is focusing on increasing the number to 100% by making touch screen as a mandatory spec to be a next generation Ultrabook. Though ultrabooks are still a minor share of total Windows PC sales, there has been a recent jump in the growth of touch laptops, according to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at the NPD Group. “Touch has been doing much ...

Neowin has published a report on the supposed Surface 2 specs. As expected, Surface Pro 2 will be powered by Intel Haswell based CPU which will double its current battery life from 3-4 hours to 6-7 hours. While the look and feel of the device will remain the same, it seems Microsoft has refined the kickstand to some extent. Leaked Specs: Haswell-based Core i5 Will help increase battery life significantly RAM doubled from 4GB to 8GB. Not sure how much I believe this since it seems somewhat unnecessary and increases power consumption Device will look similar to the current Pro Microsoft has “refined” the kickstand Possibly one that is more robust stand that is stronger or one that offers alternative viewing angles (speculation) Price will remain the same Launches near the release of Windows 8.1 Microsoft is also planning a large marketing campaign during the launch period to promote the new ...

While there are many positives and negatives one can list out for the announced Microsoft-Nokia deal, I have only one concern. The marketing team at Microsoft is completely different from the marketing team at Nokia. You can just tell the difference by observing them from the recent campaigns. Nokia’s marketing is always bold, straight-forward and nowadays takes on its competition directly and in-directly through various forms of marketing activities. It worked most of the time for Nokia and I fear Microsoft could change this. In his letter to Microsoft, Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is planning to integrate global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible. I don’t think Microsoft’s unified marketing strategy will work the way they expect. Marketing ...
