Microsoft recently announced renaming its cloud storage service SkyDrive to OneDrive after trademark lawsuit with British satellite broadcaster BSkyB over the name. While there was a overwhelmingly positive response to OneDrive name, Microsoft might still face some trademark suits in different countries where OneDrive name is already in use. Speaking to The Guardian, UK Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude revealed that UK government is planning to switch its productivity suite from Microsoft Office to some Open source solutions. UK government spends tens of millions of pounds a year to Microsoft and other software companies for using their software and they are looking to cut those costs. He believes that costs would come down by switching to software which can produce open-source files in the “open document format” (ODF), such as OpenOffice and Google Docs. Digitimes today reported that Samsung will no longer launch conventional notebook models except few Chromebooks in 2015. Essentially, they are ending their R&D on new Windows laptops while they continue to sell their existing models. Samsung had a strong growth in Windows laptops segment 2 years back, but since then it has lost its game with Lenovo and decreasing consumer demand for laptops. Samsung Electronics has set a goal of shipping seven million notebooks globally in 2014, a reduction of 41.67% from the 12 million units shipped in 2013, and will no longer launch conventional notebook models except Chromebooks in 2015, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers. Samsung aimed to ship 17 million notebooks in 2013 but actually shipped 12 million units, the sources said. Microsoft Bing announced the launch of Bing.com/awards, an awards season resource guide for consumers last month. It offers an interactive look at the 2014 award season including Golden Globes, the Grammy’s and the Oscars. Microsoft then said that the site will be updated periodically as the award season progresses. A recent stealth promotional campaign to promote Microsoft Xbox by Machinima came to light few days back. As per the new promotions, Machinima video partners will get an additional $3 per thousand video views for posting videos featuring Xbox One content. Machinima’s UK community manager himself tweeted about this promotion. It was also revealed that there was similar campaign around Xbox One’s launch in November, which offered an additional $1 CPM for videos “promoting the Xbox One and its release games.” These videos should have at least 30 seconds of Xbox One game play video that mentioned the Xbox One by name and also includes tag “XB1M13″.   Microsoft released a firmware update for Surface Pro 2 users in December and then later pulled it due to issues caused by the update. Microsoft then said, “To ensure the best experience for our customers during the holiday season, we have taken steps to remove the update for Surface Pro 2 that was previously published through Windows Update on December 10,” and even confirmed that they are working to release an alternative update package after the holidays. Today, there are reports that Microsoft Surface Pro 2 users are receiving firmware update dated 18/01/2014. IBM was once again leading the list with 6,809 patents for 21st year, followed by Samsung, Canon and Sony.
