At Microsoft’s Federal Executive Forum, an annual event where people from around the federal government gather together to discuss how technology can be used to improve their workflow and others. As we are seeing in the other industries, Cloud computing is a hot topic among Federal agencies too. The popular public cloud services from Amazon, Salesforce, etc, does not suit their needs. As agencies explore moves to the cloud, many may have solutions already in place, and they need a partner who can help them leverage those, lower security risks and reduce training and implementation costs. In some cases, agencies may often be looking at some new combination of private cloud or even public or dedicated community cloud for government. Our hybrid cloud gives complex government environments the flexibility of working with us on their terms and within their architecture choice. Instead of coming to the table with predisposed ideas of what is best ...

One hypothesis I frequently promote is that the media loves to criticise Microsoft and will take any opportunity to do so.  The high negative anti-microsoft sentiment in the tech blogs often bubbles its way into the mainstream press.  Newly minted Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently promoted Mark Penn to Chief Strategy Officer.  Mark Penn is the mastermind behind the Scroogled campaign. Previous to Microsoft, Mr. Penn was a high level democratic political consultant who eventually worked on Hilary Clinton’s political campaign.  Mr. Penn has always received pretty favorable press coverage especially from more center-left leaning publications as the New York Times. But it seems now that Mark Penn works for Microsoft he has fallen out of favor with the press. And the Times has published a fairly negative hit piece on Mr. Penn.  Here is an excerpt from the NYT article with some of the spin taken out: Mark Penn ...

Steve Ballmer joined his old college friend Dean Peter Tufano at the Saïd Business School for a question and answer session.  This is among Steve Ballmer’s first public appearances since Satya Nadella was named CEO of Microsoft and Ballmer officially retired. The relatively informal question and answer session deals very little with the future of Microsoft and mostly discusses higher level business inquiries such as innovation, failure, and management.  Personally I really miss Steve Ballmer, nobody had the energy & passion he had for the company and it’s quite apparent after watching this q&a session. (Talk starts at around 5:30) A few choice quotes from the talk that were tweeted by a senior Verge reporter: Ballmer answers question on what he’d want on his grave stone once he’s dead. “He was a great father and a great husband.” Ballmer says the number one best thing about being rich is “I can ...

Yesterday, Microsoft announced the preview of Open Source Office 365 SDK for Android. Microsoft’s preview release of new Office 365 APIs extends the platform that was introduced in Office 2013 by adding the ability for both websites and native applications to consume Office 365 data. This is a project from the MS Open Tech Hub to help Android developers access Office 365 data from their apps. This is powerful. Now, both web applications as well as native applications running on Windows 8, iOS, Android, and other device platforms can consume Office 365 data by using REST APIs and standard OAuth flows. This preview release of Office 365 APIs supports a limited number of SharePoint, Exchange, and Windows Azure Active Directory (AD) data sources. But this is only the start of a much larger innovation. Moving forward, we’ll also support additional data sources in SharePoint and Exchange as well as supporting additional ...
