So far Microsoft has not released any sales figures for the Microsoft Surface RT, but in Microsoft’s first comment on the performance of the device, Steve Ballmer has told Le Parisien that sales of the Microsoft Surface "are starting modestly." Microsoft blamed this more on a lack of distribution rather than demand, noting that the device is only being sold through Microsoft Stores, where the tablet is in fact often on short supply. Talking about the shortages, he said "It’s a good sign," adding that Microsoft "will fix this problem quickly" and that the increase in capacity is part of the company’s strategy. Steve also talked about the coming Surface Pro, noting that it will have a higher-definition screen and Intel processor. Microsoft Bing team today blogged about some stats regarding the traffic on Bing and MSN on Election Day in US. ComScore revealed that almost 32 million people visited Bing and MSN to say informed on Election Day, with over 308 million pages viewed. More on the Bing/MSN traffic from ComScore, While TV has long been the dominant medium for election coverage, our data also revealed that a significant audience was also looking for a second screen experience on election night.  In fact, almost 8 million people visited Bing and MSN during the primetime broadcast hours of 8-11 PM ET on election night, which matched CBS and beat Fox (4.9 million) and MSNBC (4.7 million)**. People visiting Bing peaked at 11 PM ET on Election Day followed by the second most visited time period of 12 PM ET the following day. The Verge have posted an except of their show, and in the above segment they look at a variety of Windows 8 hybrids, including the Microsoft Surface, Ideapad Yoga, the Asus VivoTab RT, the Toshiba U924T and a few more tablets. The video shows them to be rather dismissing of what in most cases are rather beautiful devices that I would be proud to be carrying around. Digitimes reports that Microsoft and Intel together are planning to boost Windows 8 touch screen laptop sales this holiday season by working to cut prices by first tier vendors to as low as $399 for 11.6 inch hybrids. Microsoft today announced that Xbox 360 leads the US console market for 22nd consecutive month. It held 56% of the total console sales. YouGov has found in their regular brand survey, which asks consumers whether they heard good or bad things about a brand, that Microsoft’s brand seems to be making all of the right moves. Since mid-October, Microsoft perception has risen from 17 to 25. Among tablet owners, the brand enjoys even better perception levels, moving from 23 to 33 over the same period. Since Windows 8 promotions kicked in at mid-October, the Windows brand has seen its buzz score rise from 14 to 23. That is the brand’s highest buzz score since the launch of Windows 7. And with tablet users, the Windows brand rose to a 30 score the first week of November. Even Bing is benefiting, moving from 10 to 16 over the last several weeks. Rick Rashid, Microsoft’s Chief Research Officer gave a demonstration in Tianjin, China at Microsoft Research Asia’s 21st Century Computing event. He discussed about the Speech recognition in computing and the recent breakthrough Microsoft has in it. Until recently though, even the best speech systems still had word error rates of 20-25% on arbitrary speech. Just over two years ago, researchers at Microsoft Research and the University of Toronto made another breakthrough. By using a technique called Deep Neural Networks, which is patterned after human brain behaviour, researchers were able to train more discriminative and better speech recognizers than previous methods. During my October 25 presentation in China, I had the opportunity to showcase the latest results of this work. Few days back, WMPoweruser reported about a mysterious ZTE Windows Phone device with 5.9inch screen. Many doubted whether Windows Phone 8 can scale to such high resolutions with app compatibility. Now, we have another rumor from @MS_Nerd about this matter. It seems Microsoft is working on two fronts in bringing Windows based device with screen sizes ranging from 5-inch to less than 10-inch. These 7-inch device is expected to have stylus support and include IE and Reader as well. @MS_Nerd: ZTE Blade 8: WP8 counts 3 pixels as 2. MSFT adding stylus support in OneNote, IE & Reader. It seems Acer will just not stop complaining about Microsoft releasing their own Windows tablet. Acer President for Greater China, Linxian Lang, has said he expects Microsoft will find building their own hardware like eating “hard rice.” It had previously said  that the Surface would have a “negative impact” on the Windows ecosystem and urged Microsoft to “think twice” about its decision to build the device, adding that it doesn’t think the Windows maker will be good at it. With more and more rumours of more Microsoft-branded hardware, including a Surface phone and Xbox Surface tablet, I think Acer will just have to get used to the new reality.   On Monday night’s Halloween-centered episode of Hawaii Five-0, the new Microsoft Surface was spotted being used by Dr. Max Bergman.  Before clicking on the bottom right icon to bring up a photo, it was clear he was showcasing it for the camera.  Also spotted on the episode was a blue polycarbonate Nokia Lumia, but it was unclear if it was a Lumia 900 or Lumia 920.
