Over the last weekend, we reported about Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer commenting about initial Surface sales from a French news website. Many tech blogs reported about the same and Microsoft has now responded to this to Pocketnow which you can read below, “When asked about Surface, Steve’s use of the term “modest” was in relation to the company’s approach in ramping up supply and distribution of Surface with Windows RT, which has only been available via our online store and certain Microsoft retail stores in the U.S.  While our approach has been modest, Steve notes the reception to the device has been “fantastic” which is why he also stated that “soon, it will be available in more countries and in more stores.” I think we will come to know about the exact Surface sales after the next quarterly earnings announcement from Microsoft. What do you think? Over the last weekend, we reported about Microsoft CEO ...

Microsoft and Google will be battling it out in U.S. District Court in Seattle this week starting Tuesday. At issue is Google’s subsidiary Motorola’s unreasonable license fees for FRAND-related patents. The trial stems from a lawsuit Microsoft filed in November 2010, claiming that Motorola breached its contract to provide, at reasonable rates, use of its patented technologies that have become part of industry standards in online-video viewing and wireless usage.I Microsoft claims that Motorola was asking too much for use of some of its industry patents: 2.25 percent of the sale price of each Xbox and Windows which would amount to Microsoft paying Motorola $4 billion annually. Motorola is seeking from the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) an import ban on Xbox consoles because the consoles contain some of the industry-standard patents under contention in the Seattle trial. Motorola had also sought — and won — an injunction from a ...

Continuing with their quest to make it so you can not turn on the TV without seeing Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 had a massive presence at the MTV Europe Music Awards. There presenters Heidi Klum and Sway used a massive Windows 8 touch screen to interact with viewers and keep up to date with what’s going on back stage. With Microsoft intending to roll out a big Windows Phone 8 campaign starting today featuring a variety of celebrities I suspect we can start to see the shape of Microsoft’s marketing push now – being associated with celebrities and hoping some of the cool will rub off. Do our readers think this approach will work? Let us know below. Via Neowin.net and Mashables.com ...

Google has announced that  Google Apps will discontinue support for IE8 on November 15. IE8 was released in 2009 and is the most recent Internet Explorer that will run on XP. The move will leave IT shops that use Google Apps with the choice of either installing an unmanaged browser like Firefox or Chrome, or finally moving their ancient PCs to a new OS- likely running Windows 7 or if the shop is small enough Windows 8, the new OS the hardware will come with. In this way Google reminding XP shops that their OS is in fact ancient is very likely to help Microsoft, and possibly boost Windows 8 adoption in small business. Here’s to that PC replacement cycle, kicked off by Google. Via Stuff.co.nz. ...

In a blog post Microsoft’s Kevin Dallas, General Manager of Windows Embedded talked about the future of their Connected Car platform, most famously used by Ford in their SYNC system. Microsoft and Ford recently celebrated their 5th anniversary and also their 5th million SYNC system shipped. Kevin notes that the car is becoming another one of those devices and an extension of the mobile computing experience and that they are focused on making the experience of transitioning content and information between the car and other devices seamless. Kevin makes the point that  mobile phones and tablets are designed to provide immersive experiences that draw people in, but in the car the interaction experience needs to be brief and glanceable. While speech and heads up displays are the key interfaces that belong in the car, they also saw the potential for other types of interfaces like facial recognition and gesture in ...

There must be something about the Microsoft Surface that makes its users rather distracted. It may be the perfectly balanced design of the blissful confidence of having a full-power computer always at your beck and call, but it seems Surface owners often forget they are carrying it, and therefore leaves the device in harm’s way. The latest victim Robbbilicious’s Surface, that was also left on top of his car, where it subsequently fell off and was run over at 60 mph. He writes: Each car passed by with the tires on each side of the Surface until the very last car. The tire of the car ran completely over the Surface and next thing I saw was my brand new $700 tablet and touch cover flying through the air in separate directions! My heart jumped, and so did I! I jumped out of my car and ran across the street ...

In Activision’s recent earnings call  CEO Bobby Kotick let slip an interesting titbit regarding next generation consoles in 2013. “We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful,” Kotick said. The Wii U will be coming out in 2012, and is at present not expected to set the world on fire, due disappointing performance and limited features, which only come close to current gen consoles released more than 7 years ago. There are already strong rumours that the next Xbox will be released in Q4 2013, which may mean Microsoft will have the next crucial holiday season mostly to itself. Of course there are also rumours of Sony introducing their next gen console at E3 next year. Given ...

So far Microsoft has not released any sales figures for the Microsoft Surface RT, but in Microsoft’s first comment on the performance of the device, Steve Ballmer has told Le Parisien that sales of the Microsoft Surface "are starting modestly." Microsoft blamed this more on a lack of distribution rather than demand, noting that the device is only being sold through Microsoft Stores, where the tablet is in fact often on short supply. Talking about the shortages, he said "It’s a good sign," adding that Microsoft "will fix this problem quickly" and that the increase in capacity is part of the company’s strategy. Steve also talked about the coming Surface Pro, noting that it will have a higher-definition screen and Intel processor. He also repeated an earlier announcement that the company sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades to consumers in only 3 days. Via Capital.gr ...

The Verge have posted an except of their show, and in the above segment they look at a variety of Windows 8 hybrids, including the Microsoft Surface, Ideapad Yoga, the Asus VivoTab RT, the Toshiba U924T and a few more tablets. The video shows them to be rather dismissing of what in most cases are rather beautiful devices that I would be proud to be carrying around.
