Microsoft today announced that Outlook.com web mail service is moving out of preview. Microsoft revealed the new Outlook.com to replace Hotmail with new UI/UX features last July and now the service has shed off its preview tag. Over 60 million people are actively using the Outlook.com service and Microsoft is planning to upgrade hundreds of millions of Hotmail users to the new Outlook.com interface starting tomorrow and will be completed by this summer. Users can sign up for new @outlook.com addresses or use their existing Gmail or Hotmail address to get started with this service. Microsoft is also planning to reveal no.of new features such as new Calender UI, Skype Video calling, etc, soon. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates today had an interview with CBS This Morning program. He was talking mostly about his foundation work while answering some questions related to Microsoft as well. When Charlie Rose asked about the smartphone industry, Bill Gates admitted that Microsoft didn’t “get out in the lead very early.” “We didn’t miss cell phones, but the way that we went about it didn’t allow us to get the leadership. Despite severe stock shortages and a high price the Microsoft Surface pro has still managed to make it onto Best Buy’s Bet Seller list, currently sitting in 4th spot behind much, much cheaper Amazon Kindle and Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Windows 8 tablet has been seeing severe supply shortages, but Microsoft has promised to restock this weekend, and is currently taking pre-orders for delivery later in the month. Interestingly on the same page the Surface RT tablet holds 12th spot, suggesting the Windows 8 tablet may see better success than its more limited sibling. See the Best Buy page here. Microsoft Xbox 360 maintained the leadership rank in the US console market for 25 consecutive months. Xbox 360 sold 281,000 units in January which is impressive for a console which is 7 year old. TeleGeography, a telecom market analysis firm has released a new data on international telephone traffic. According to their report, Skype calls now account for one third of the total international telephone traffic. International telephone traffic grew 5 percent in 2012, to 490 billion minutes. Skype-to-Skype voice and video traffic grew 44 percent in 2012, to 167 billion minutes. Today ifixit posted their tear down of Microsoft Surface for Windows Pro. Microsoft Surface Pro scored a repairability rating of 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair). Here are the reasons iFixit posted at the end of the process, Microsoft Surface Pro Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) The battery is not soldered to the motherboard, so at least no soldering is required to replace it. The SSD is removable — but you risk killing your tablet by trying to open it. There are over 90 screws inside this device. We’re proponents of mechanical fasteners, but this number is a tad crazy. The display assembly (comprising of a fused glass and LCD) is extremely difficult to remove / replace. Tons of adhesive hold everything in place, including the display and battery. The Microsoft Surface has not been free of WIFI issues, with many users complaining of losing connectivity which eventually needs switching WIFI on and off to fix. Now Microsoft has revealed the changelog of an update which will address that and other issues. Panos Panay, GM for the Microsoft Surface, has had some good news for long-suffering Surface fans. He has confirmed on twitter that Microsoft would be restocking the 128 GB Surface tablet at Best Buy and Microsoft Stores this weekend, with stock expected on Saturday. The less popular 64 GB Surface Pro tablet, which nevertheless also sold out, is being restocked right now. At the D: Dive into Media conference, Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi and Nancy Tellem discussed the Xbox entertainment growth and strategy. Yusuf Mehdi announced that in 2012, the amount of TV and other entertainment offerings on Xbox almost tripled, now surpassing 100 custom, voice-controlled TV and entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE. He also revealed some numbers on Xbox 360 console. There are more than 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world and 24 million Kinect sensors sold since launch. There are about 46 million members in Xbox LIVE community. Xbox Users enjoyed more than 18 billion hours of entertainment in 2012.
