Last month we reported about a new Windows 8.1 Update 1 build that got leaked which seemed to be a new SKU from Microsoft. The leaked build was named Windows 8.1 with Bing. There were reports that Windows 8.1 with Bing is Microsoft’s experimentation with monetization of low-cost devices with low licensing costs. Windows 8.1 ADK got leaked today and it provides us the information about the new Windows 8.1 with Bing. Windows 8.1 with Bing is targeted towards low-cost devices in which OEMs won’t be able to change the default search engine. However, users can manually change it if they want. This is a clever way to prevent Google from striking search deals with Windows OEMs. Windows 8.1 with Bing Windows 8.1 with Bing is a new Windows edition that helps OEMs add Windows to low-cost devices while driving end user usage of Microsoft Services such as Bing and OneDrive. ...

Sony has had a very successful launch of the PS4.  Early adopters of the PS4 have touted native full 1080p gaming as one of the many promises and early advantages of Sony’s new console. In a blog post last November Sony wrote in a blog post that Killzone Shadow fall features a “competitive multiplayer mode” that supports up to 24 players and “runs at native 1080p and 60 fps.” To put it nicely this isn’t quite true and gamers are furious. In single player mode, Killzone Shadow Fall runs at a full 1080p. In multiplayer mode, however, the native resolution drops significantly in order to bump the frame rate from 30 fps to near 60 fps. A brief explanation from CraveOnline: Killzone: Shadow Fall outputs at 1080p in single-player and multiplayer, but it isn’t native. It uses a unique processing method that blends 960 x 1080 images together. Therefore, the 1080p advertised on the ...

Microsoft Research today released a new tool called ZooTracer, it is a desktop tool that can be used to trace animal movement by using consumer video equipment. ZooTracer is a collaboration work between  Computational Ecology and Environmental Sciences (CEES) group at Microsoft Research Cambridge, and the Computer Vision group, also from Microsoft Research Cambridge. There are some existing animal tracking software, but the ZooTracer offers distinct benefits such as easy usability, it can take video from anywhere(consumer videos from mobile devices too) and the user can quickly modify the results—helping the software learn how to track any object. Why should we track animals using this tool? “For example, bee populations are in drastic decline. What plants do they pollinate—and why? That is a question pretty relevant to the production of food for human consumption, but actually watching bees fly around and trying to track their plant preferences and the flight paths they take is a ...

Reading view is a cool new feature Microsoft released as part of Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1. Reading view allows you to focus on the main content of the Web page you want to read, without the distractions of related (or unrelated) content surrounding the story. When you visit a compatible web page, IE will show a Reading View icon at the bottom next to the URL, just tap it to enjoy reading the web page in Reading view mode. While other browsers like Safari too provide this same feature, Microsoft detailed their effort to create this experience. One of the highlight is that, Microsoft created a whole new font called Sitka. IE 11 reading view takes advantage of a brand new font for Windows 8.1, called Sitka. It was developed for Microsoft by Mathew Carter, in collaboration with the Advanced Reading Technologies team that previously developed Clear Type text rendering ...

A new report claims that then Cloud EVP Satya Nadella, Tony Bates, along with Bill Gates and the Microsoft board all initially opposed Steve Ballmer’s plan to acquire Nokia.  Nadella would later change his mind but Bates remained vehemently opposed. Tony Bates is no longer with the company, Gates stepped down as chairman, while Ballmer is now on the board and Satya Nadella is currently CEO. If this report is indeed true, I have a deepened respect for Steve Ballmer. Bloomberg reports: Ballmer’s relations with the board hit a low when he shouted at a June meeting that if he didn’t get his way he couldn’t be CEO, people briefed on the meeting said. The flare-up was over his proposed purchase of most of Nokia Oyj, and part of an ongoing debate: Should Microsoft be a software company or a hardware company too? Several directors and co-founder and then-Chairman Bill ...
