Microsoft has its annual company meeting at Key Arena yesterday where more than 20,000 Microsoft employees assembled to hear Steve Ballmer talk for the one last time in front on this huge crowd. As expected, he was moved to tears at one point of his speech. The Verge describes the situation in which Ballmer had tears as below, At one point during the meeting, Ballmer chose to play the song he used back at his first company meeting in 1983: Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”. He then proceeded to jump and dance around the stage screaming at the top of his voice “the sound of Microsoft!” After the song ended, an emotional Ballmer paused to “enjoy this for a minute,” with tears visibly streaming down his face. “You work for the greatest company in the world, soak it in.” Ballmer also promised one thing, “we will deliver the ...

Kara Swisher is reporting that Alan Mulally is currently the top pick to become Microsoft’s next CEO.  I have reached out myself to induviduals familiar with the situation who tell me that the board is no where near a final list of candidates and Mulally has indicated he is not interested in the job.  Now, Mrs. Swisher has significantly more credibility than I do, so you’ll have to independently come to your own conclusion here.  Considering Mulally is approaching the age of 70, I still have trouble believing he would become CEO since he would have to plan his own succession almost immediately.  Now, Ballmer and Mulally are friends and he has advised the Microsoft CEO in the past.  Certainly it is quite plausible that Mulally could be giving Microsoft some guidance on picking their next CEO. I will repost an editorial I wrote regarding Mr. Mulally some weeks back: ...

Microsoft released its own anti-virus program Security Essentials back in 2009 and it even started bundling with Windows. Since then, Microsoft is constantly updating the malware engine and the definitions. But some Anti-virus test results, case studies put Security Essentials to the bottom of the post. Holly Stewart, senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, told Dennis Technology Labs that Microsoft made a decision to switch to what it calls a “baseline strategy”. It started focusing on protecting their customers instead of making  Security Essentials score better in competitive tests. Microsoft is “doing everything we can to protect against real threats” and even passing their own data on threats to other antivirus vendors as well. She said that shouldn’t be seen as Microsoft leaving customers unprotected, claiming the company is merely focusing on the most serious threats. “Baseline does not equal bad,” she said. “We provide a high-quality, ...

Bill Gates had a chat with David Rubenstein, Harvard Campaign co-chair for a Harvard fundraising campaign. In that Gates revealed that it was a mistake to force users to use hold down “Ctrl+Alt+Del” to log into their computers and he also blamed IBM for doing so. “You want to have something you do with the keyboard that is signaling to a very low level of the software — actually hard-coded in the hardware — that it really is bringing in the operating system you expect, instead of just a funny piece of software that puts up a screen that looks like a log-in screen, and then it listens to your password and then it’s able to do that,” Gates said. The Microsoft co-founder said that there was an option to make a single button for such a command, but the IBM keyboard designer didn’t want to give Microsoft a single ...

Microsoft first announced Windows on ARM project 2 years back. Since then, they branded it Windows RT and started licensing it to OEMs. In fact, Microsoft itslef has become Windows RT OEM. Since its launch in October 2012, Windows RT devices are struggling to find a place in the fastest growing tablet market. Asus and Samsung discontinued their Windows RT efforts soon after the poor market reception. Lenovo was selling Yoga 11 Windows RT devices until it released Yoga 11S Intel based device. Dell and Microsoft continued selling XPS 10 and Surface RT devices respectively. Today, Dell has also announced that XPS 10 product is unavailable. And they have suggested Intel based Latitude 10 as a comparable system. So, the only Windows RT tablet you can buy in the market right now is Microsoft Surface RT. In the near future, Surface 2 from Microsoft is getting released. Other than that, I don’t think any other Windows ...

As expected, Microsoft is already exploring the ways to navigate Windows using Kinect gestures. Even though Kinect had a official Windows SDK for a longtime, Microsoft never showed off a way to navigate Windows using air gestures. Today, The Verge revealed that Microsoft Research is already exploring the potential use of it. In this project, you will be mounting a Kinect camera above a desk and it detects a number of gestures above and around a keyboard and mouse. Microsoft Researcher Abigail Sellen says the following, “What we don’t want here is Tom Cruise in minority report,” “What gestures are good at are being very casual, expressive. What they’re not good at is being precise. Touch is good at that, mouse pointer is good at that. We don’t need to do that with gestures.” “We’re not doing anything precise, and nothing that requires you to hold your hands up ...
