For the last few years, Skype offered group video calling to Premium users on Windows desktop and Mac and more recently Xbox One. Today, they are making group video calling free – for all users on these platforms. Back in the late 90′s, Instant Messaging was a big thing in the internet. AOL’s AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo, and ICQ were the big players in the market. In 1997, Microsoft acquired Hotmail, one of the most popular e-mail service. By seeing the popularity of the instant messengers, Microsoft decided to enter the market with MSN Messenger by allowing every Hotmail user be able to log on to Messenger with a Hotmail address and password as seamlessly as possible. Skype and its employees have raised funds to give a heroic 10-year-old Ugandan orphan named Kasiita Ben the educational tools he needs. Kasiita came to Skype’s attention because of students at George Street Middle School in New Brunswick, Canada. They’ve long been meeting with Kasiita and other Ugandan children over Skype as part of CHAT to the Future, a Skype in the classroom partner. Qik is a mobile video sharing service, that allowed users to record and share the experience with your friends, family and their favorite social networks. One of the unique feature of Qik is that it allowed users to stream live video from their mobile devices to the internet. Skype bought Qik back in 2011 for about $150 million. Since then, the app didn’t receive any major updates, but remained active. Today, Qik has sent out email to their users that the service will be shutdown on April 30th.
