Even though the new Windows RT platform didn’t have enough success so far, Qualcomm remains bullish about its future. Talking to CNET, Qualcomm executive Horton said that Microsoft is a very capable organization, with lots of technologies,” but “didn’t hit a home run out of the gate on the very first product, but they’re working on it.”. Also Qualcomm believes in Microsoft’s vision of having both entertainment and productivity on a single device. He said, “The RT of today may not be the RT of tomorrow.” “We have a longer term view on these things,” Talluri said. “The RT of today may not be the RT of tomorrow. Surface 2 and Nokia Lumia 2520 are the only Windows RT tablets will be available in the near future. Even though both these devices runs on ARM processors, there is a huge difference between both of them as Surface 2 is powered by Nvidia Tegra 4 processor while Lumia 2520 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Speaking to CNET, Qualcomm executives emphasized the better overall performance of Snapdragon 800 powering Lumia 2520 over Surface 2. They went on to state that it’s not even comparable! “The performance on [the 2520] is brilliant,” Raj Talluri, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm’s application processors, told CNET. “It’s really at the next level. It’s not even really a contest [compared to Surface 2] … In every area, it’s much bigger, faster, and lower power.” We are yet to see the actual performance and battery life reviews of Lumia 2520 against ...

In Windows 8 devices, the Start Screen always had the Desktop tile pinned by default. It allowed users to quickly move in and out of desktop mode from the Start screen. However, Microsoft has a different view on this and the Desktop tile is no longer part of the default tiles pinned in the Start Screen of Windows RT 8.1 devices. Users can always pin it again, but I think it is yet another step from Microsoft to move users away from traditional desktop mode. Microsoft provided the following statement regarding this action, “The only desktop apps without modern versions which run on RT are the Office apps: Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In order to streamline access to them, we pinned those apps directly to the first page of Start. Clicking any of these takes you directly to that Desktop app. You can also bring up the switch list ...

Not a surprise here. Microsoft’s next generation Surface Pro device Surface Pro 2 scored the same Repairability Score as its predecessor. It scored 1 out of 10, while 10 being the easiest to repair. Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Repairability Score: 1 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) The battery is not soldered to the motherboard—so it can be replaced without soldering, if not without great difficulty. The SSD can be replaced, but not without first risking damage to the tablet simply by opening it. There are over 90 screws inside this device. Mechanical fasteners are great, but frankly, we draw the line at 89. The display assembly consists of a fused glass panel and LCD, and is extremely difficult to remove and replace. Tons of adhesive hold everything in place, including the display and battery. The delicate and arduous opening procedure leaves no room for mistakes: one slip-up, ...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 reviews appeared online today. I’ve collected some conclusions from those reviews from popular websites. While many of these reviews are not so convinced with Microsoft’s argument that Surface Pro 2 can replace both your Ultrabook and tablet, they are happy over the improved battery life with Haswell processor.  Read the full reviews by clicking the title of the blogs/websites below. AnandTech: Surface Pro 2 is a good improvement over its predecessor. The platform is quicker, quieter and boasts longer battery life as well. The new kickstand is awesome, as are the new touch/type covers, and the new display is a big step in the right direction. If you were tempted by the original Surface Pro, its successor is a solid evolution and that much more tempting. I really like using Surface Pro 2 and Windows 8.1 in general as a productivity focused tablet OS. When Surface ...

Microsoft Surface 2 reviews appeared online today. I’ve collected some conclusions from those reviews from popular websites. Mostly, the hardware received positive reviews with the exception that it is not pushing the boundaries. And the lack of apps in Windows Store was the most popular negative thoughts of Surface 2. Read the full reviews by clicking the title of the blogs/websites below. AnandTech: Surface 2 is a big step forward compared to Surface RT. The chassis looks awesome, the device is significantly quicker and battery life is appreciably better. The new display is much better than its predecessor (and so much better than what you get from most $449 PCs). The new touch/type covers see similarly major improvements. Surface 2 also benefits from the update to Windows RT 8.1, giving it a far more polished OS than what launched a year ago. The overall package is just a lot better ...

Microsoft is beginning the sales of next generation Surface devices, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 from Oct 22nd. Since the launch is few days away, retailers in launch countries has already been receiving units from Microsoft to put on sale on Oct 22nd. However, retailer Argos listed the Surface 2 tablets on its own website allowing customers to purchase them online and pick them up in store. People were able to buy the device yesterday even though the device is launch in on Oct 22nd. After realizing their mistake, Argos has now removed Surface from the sales listings. Their response on this incident,  ”We fully comply with embargos issued by our suppliers and have withdrawn the Microsoft Surface 2 from sale with immediate effect. We are working with Microsoft to investigate this error as a matter of urgency.” Source: The Verge ...

We wrote about Microsoft’s idea of creating Surface Blades for different purposes last month. During the second generation Surface launch event held last month, Microsoft announced the Surface Remix Project which showed how you could click in a specially designed Touch Cover that let you remix your favorite songs and share them with the world. Even though it is limited to music for now, it shows that productivity can go various other ways, not just click in keyboards. Microsoft realized that this concept has a great potential and they visited Art Center College of design to meet students for a three day workshop where students were asked to imagine different blades concepts. Microsoft refers the Cover you click in to Surface as blades. The Surface Remix Project has a music blade and there could be many other blades for various other purposes. Microsoft released a short video to show how ...
