The general manager of Microsoft Turkey, Tamer Özmen said Microsoft is planning to build a tablet research and development laboratory in Turkey to facilitate “Fatih”, the Turkish government’s tablet education project. “We are very keen to be involved in the project and we’re working on establishing the first research and development laboratory in Turkey”, he added. The move came as the Turkish government planned to replace the traditional blackboards and text books with electronic boards and tablet PCs as part of the Fatih education project. Microsoft did not reveal further details about the facility. But, as per the government requirement, it seems that nearly 15 million tablets will be purchased for the project. Microsoft started to sell their first Windows hardware Surface RT back in October last year. Initially the device was available only in Microsoft retail locations in US and then later expanded its availability to other retail stores and countries. Three months after that, Microsoft announced the availability of Surface Pro which is based on Intel Core i5 processor which is available in US alone for now. Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft has sold about a little more than million Surface RT units and 400,000 Surface Pro units since launch. Microsoft yesterday announced that they are expanding the availability of Surface RT and Surface Pro to many other countries around the world. Surface Pro is soon coming to Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and United Kingdom. The roll out will begin in late March. Microsoft has also announced that the Surface RT will be coming to Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan in the upcoming months and will release more details on it soon. We already saw reports that Microsoft Surface RT attracted a long line in Beijing, China back in October when it was first launched. It seems that the demand didn’t last for so many days, according to IDC, Microsoft Surface RT shipments has been low with only 30,000 units shipped during the fourth quarter. So, Surface accounted for only 1% of tablet market in China. IDC also reported that Microsoft was concerned less with boosting shipments, and instead used the device to demonstrate to PC vendors “how great” a Windows tablet could be, Chang said. Despite severe stock shortages and a high price the Microsoft Surface pro has still managed to make it onto Best Buy’s Bet Seller list, currently sitting in 4th spot behind much, much cheaper Amazon Kindle and Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Windows 8 tablet has been seeing severe supply shortages, but Microsoft has promised to restock this weekend, and is currently taking pre-orders for delivery later in the month. Interestingly on the same page the Surface RT tablet holds 12th spot, suggesting the Windows 8 tablet may see better success than its more limited sibling. See the Best Buy page here. Now Microsoft has revealed the changelog of an update which will address that and other issues. Panos Panay, GM for the Microsoft Surface, has had some good news for long-suffering Surface fans. He has confirmed on twitter that Microsoft would be restocking the 128 GB Surface tablet at Best Buy and Microsoft Stores this weekend, with stock expected on Saturday. The less popular 64 GB Surface Pro tablet, which nevertheless also sold out, is being restocked right now.
