Speaking at Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet Conference today, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Marketing Tami Reller revealed that Microsoft has sold over 200 million Windows 8 licenses since its launch in October 2012. Previously, Microsoft announced the sales numbers of Windows 8 in May 2013 when 100 million milestone was reached. It took about 8 more months to double the numbers. About 240 million licenses of Windows 7 were sold in its first 12 months, compared to 200 million licenses of Windows 8 in 15+ months. The decline in sales rate is due to various factors. First, PC market in general is in decline. Second, Windows 7 came after not so well received product called Windows Vista. Lenovo Group today announced their record financial results for its Q3 ended December 31, 2013. The quarterly revenue was US$10.8 billion, a 15 percent increase year-over-year, passing the US$10 billion milestone for the first time ever. Despite the slow down in the PC industry, Lenovo has shown strong growth in the PC segment. It continued to expand lead as number one PC maker with 18.5% market share. Lenovo’s PC shipments for the third fiscal quarter were 15.3 million units. This is a great example for other Windows OEMs who blames Windows for their declining sales. A new consumer study has revealed that more men prefer Microsoft brand over Apple. Annalect conducted a research to study ‘Changing Role of Men’, and found that, in terms of brands that “resonate” with the male population, Microsoft trumped Apple and other brands across age groups. The study interviewed Boomers (born 1946-1964), Gen Xers (born 1965-1979), and Millennials (born (1980-2000), tallying up to a sum total of 1,509 men for the November 2013 study. Each participant was given a list of brands, ranging from Starbucks, McDonalds’s Coca Cola, Levi’s and Nike. With each different group of men, Microsoft proved a more popular choice than Apple, and was comprehensively favored over the Cupertino, California-based brand.
