Reuters recently reported that Sony is planning to sell its Vaio personal computer division in an effort to streamline its business. Vaio PC division is losing money already and Sony is looking to stop it by selling it to possible parties. Sony is already in dicussion with investment fund Japan Industrial Partners to sell its Vaio unit. A new company would be set up by Japan Industrial Partners to take over the Vaio brand’s operations in Japan, according to the plan under consideration, the source said. Financial details and stakeholdings in the new entity were still being discussed. Apart from Japan, Sony is also planning to stop its operations from overseas PC markets. PC market in general is in bad shape with declining growth and also Sony holds very low single digit market share in that market. As Microsoft’s Enterprise and Cloud chief Satya Nadella has been appointed as the CEO of the company, his old position was left in void. Many of us expected Scott Guthrie to take over Satya’s old position and it seems like Microsoft has done the same. Microsoft announced internally today that Scott Guthrie has been promoted to his new position on February 4. ZDnet’s Mary Jo Foley summarized people who will be working now with Guthrie, Nadella had quite a few direct reports, in addition to Guthrie, who was the Corporate Vice President of Azure Program Management, as a result of various reorgs. According to latest data from NetApplications, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser continues to gain market share worldwide. In January, Internet Explorer gained 0.30% up from 57.91 percent to 58.21 percent. Internet Explorer 11 has also passed Internet Explorer 10 to become the second most used IE version. Internet Explorer 8, which is the default browser in Windows 7 now holds about 21.25% of market share. Starting with IE9, Internet Explorer team at Microsoft is delivering solid releases with significant improvements in speed, reliability and more which has resulted in improved customer usage. According to the latest market share data from Net Applications, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 barely made any significant gain in January 2014. The market share increased by just 0.09% to reach 10.58% worldwide.  More specifically, Windows 8 fell 0.26 percentage points (from 6.89 percent to 6.63 percent), while Windows 8.1 gained 0.35 percentage points (from 3.60 percent to 3.95 percent). Also, Windows 7 continued to lose market share at very slow rate. Confirming the previous reports from WSJ and Recode, Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates may get involved in product development at Microsoft after the new CEO was announced. There were multiple reports in the past few days that Satya Nadella will be announced as the new CEO and Bill Gates will step down from his chairman position to get involved in product development. As the board prepares to appoint Satya Nadella as Microsoft’s next chief executive officer, it’s considering replacing Gates as board chairman, people with knowledge of the matter have said. Gates would remain a director and be involved in product development, focusing less on administration, the people said. He’s weighing going to work at Microsoft at least one day a week, a person briefed on the matter said.
