On Thursday 24th January, Microsoft’s CFO Peter Klein said we should expect more distribution channels for the company’s Surface tablet line.  Today, there’s rumours that the Windows RT version of Surface will soon go on sale in Costco stores. Neowin reports that a list displaying Costco stores which require yearly membership will sell the 32 GB version of the tablet (without the touch cover) for $499.  The 32 GB and 64 GB versions of the tablet with the touch cover will be sold for $599 and $699.  Costco will also allow users to choose the colour of their Surface tablet touch cover, rather than being limited to the black touch cover.   In a blog post Microsoft has formally announced the retail availability of the Surface Pro tablet from the 9th February in the U.S. and Canada through all Microsoft retail stores,microsoftstore.com and at Staples and Best Buy in the U.S. as well as from a number of locations in Canada. The Core i5 tablet will be retailing from $899 for the 64 GB model.  A 128 GB model will also be available for $999. The device will come with an included Surface Pen. Microsoft also announced expanded availability of the Surface RT tablet to 13 additional markets in the coming weeks, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Due to the launch of Windows 8 in late October having a slower start than anticipated, overall PC sales did not show an increase, but in fact showed a drop in the final quarter of 2012 according to IDC and Gartner.  In an interview with Bloomberg, HP Executive Vice President Todd Bradley admitted the fact that Windows 8 had ‘a slower start than many people expected’.  However, he indicated that sales have started to improve for 2013, ‘we see continued momentum and continued growth’ in January.  Adduplex’s online statistics displayed HP PC’s had the most penetration of all the competition, commanding 32% of the over 7,500 types of PC’s that have the Windows 8 operating system.  In the hope of increasing the overall number of PC sales, HP launched a number of new Windows 8-specific PC’s in late October and early November alongside the launch of the OS and the ...

In Summer last year, freelance designer Andrew Kim received a lot of recognition on the internet after posting his take on Microsoft’s Windows 8 logos which the company had unveiled earlier that year.   It turned out that Microsoft were so impressed by Kim’s logos they gave him an official job in which he will be working specifically for a project in the company’s Xbox division.  He will be starting later this summer.  Kim said: But when it came time to make my final decision, I wanted to work at a place I can really get excited about. Microsoft removed the Start button from Windows 8 for the good, but still many people want it back. Since Microsoft is not providing any solution to bring back the old Start menu, 3rd party software like Pokki and Stardock are taking advantage of that. If you are running any of the preview versions of Windows 8, its time to upgrade. Microsoft released Windows 8 first as a Developer preview, followed by Consumer Preview and then Release Preview. Adduplex have given us a glimpse of their market share number gathered by their Windows 8 Store ad network. The numbers reveal, somewhat counter intuitively, that the Microsoft Surface has increased its share of the Windows 8 market, from 6% a month ago to 7.6% this month. This is despite the increase in the number of PCs running Windows 8 /RT from around 5000 to 7400 this month. Adduplex notes that this may be due to the expanded distribution of the Surface to non-Microsoft stores.
