We have seen Gaze UI demo in the past which uses eye-tracking technology to control Windows 8 UI. Next week at CES, Tobii will show off its eye tracker product called the REX. The REX is a strip that can be attached to bottom of your monitor in desktops or laptops and it plugs into a USB port. Along with the hardware , a special software called Tobii Gaze will help you to to track exactly what you’re looking at on the screen. For example, when you look at right corner of the Windows 8 Start screen, it should automatically scroll through the page. Consumer pricing and availability haven’t been announced, but Tobii plans to offer 5,000 units to consumers before the end of 2013; for developers, however, a special edition (seen above) should be available starting today for $995. Acer, one of the largest Windows OEM is optimistic about touch based Windows 8 devices. In an recent interview, Acer president Jim Wong has told Digitimes that with innovations such as the combination between Windows 8 and touchscreen control, vendors will be able to make breakthroughs and revitalize the PC industry. He also said that touch screen laptops based on Windows 8 devices will become mainstream in next few years with all major players will start delivering their touch products in 2013. Although most PC brand vendors are still conservative about touchscreen notebooks, Acer believes touchscreen notebooks’ shipment proportion will continue to rise to eventually surpass that for traditional notebooks and become the mainstream in the market. However, due to touchscreen module’s high costs and the market’s slow acceptance, the replacement process may take 2-3 years to complete. For 13- to 14-inch notebook models, touchscreen control increases their prices by more than ...

According to WSJ, Acer is planning to launch low cost Windows tablets next year. Acer now has Intel based Windows 8 tablets priced greater than $600 and Acer is looking to further reduce the price as they think as its current ones are “too pricey.” These low cost Windows tablets will be released in early next year and will also so be focused on Chinese market. Acer’s pursuit of lower-priced tablets will cut into its margins, but will help it secure a stronger foothold in the rapidly growing China market, said Daiwa Securities analyst Christine Wang. “Chinese white-box tablet makers are expected to sell some 60 million tablets next year, so it is a really big market,” she said. “None of the major PC brands sells a tablet right now priced to compete with them right now.” Source: WSJ ...

The Verge has been leaked some more information about Nokia’s recently rumoured upcoming Windows RT tablet. The 10.1 inch tablet will have USB and HDMI-out, and also cellular connectivity, with 10 hours battery life which can  be fast-charged to 50% in a short period. The real innovation however will come from the accompanying cover, which the Verge notes will snap in place and will double battery life, provide a keyboard and also a kickstand for the tablet. The cover will also provide two USB ports. While the cover sounds rather fantastical, it is of note that the Asus Vivotab RT (pictured above) provides a “cover” with very similar functionality, and which effectively turns the Vivotab into a laptop. Given that Nokia cover also includes a battery and keyboard it is difficult to see how it could have a much different design. AT&T will be the first to carry the tablet, ...

The Videolan team have posted an update on their KickStarter page after their fundraiser hit 90% of their £40,000 target with 7 days still to go. Standing at £36,615 at the time of writing, the team explained their plan to port VLC from Windows 8 Desktop to Windows 8 Metro, needed because the Windows ecosystem was moving in that direction, required portions of their code to be rewritten to meet Windows Metro ideals of responsiveness and the ability to wake and sleep as needed. Because VLC is an open source project the code will be re-usable by other projects making the same jump. VLC developer Geoffroy Couprie writes: Why am I excited to work on this port? This KickStarter will give us the opportunity to work full time on WinRT for a few months, and solve all these challenges for us, but also for other open source projects. We already ...

When Windows RT development was in final stages, it was reported that HTC was denied by Microsoft in becoming Windows RT OEM. One with 12-inch screen and another with 7-inch screen that will compete with iPad Mini, Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle. Both these tablets will reportedly can also make phone calls and will be powered by Qualcomm SnapDragon processors. The devices are expected to go on sale in 3Q 2013. Bloomberg also added that HTC did not choose Intel processors because it was concerned about the end user pricing which will go upto $1000.
