Microsoft has told Kotaku that popular games which are rated PEGI 18 in Europe will in fact be allowed into the Windows Store. The news presents a U-turn from their previous position, which was that such rated games will be banned from Microsoft’s Windows 8 App Store. In USA ESRB Adult games are often sex-related, and exclude most games, while popular games like Skyrim or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are rated PEGI 18 in Europe due to violence.  Microsoft will now allow those games that are rated PEGI 18 in as long as they are not rated Adult in USA. "It basically ends up disqualifying games that would be ESRB Mature," said Windows Corporate VP of Web Services Antoine Leblond. "This is to give developers a heads up that that’s where we’re going," Leblond said, "So they can have the peace of mind around developing the kinds of ...

Forget double-sided tiles.  Microsoft thinks Windows 8 users should be able to twist and turn their tiles in up to 3 dimensions, and even have cylindrical tiles. In their patent the sides of the boxes could show more information about notifications, such as the subject line of a newly received email or a full text messages. The several sides of the boxes would allow more information to be shows. The rotating tiles can also be used to reveal menus e.g for a music controls. The patents were filed in Q2 2012 and granted in Q3 2012, so may show up in some future version of Windows. Read more detail at Patentbolt.com Thanks V4X22ndNov for the tip. ...

As midnight rolls over the world, it is now the 26th in New Zealand, and some stores there are holding midnight openings for  Windows 8. Neowin reports little consumer enthusiasm so far, with only one or two customers showing up in the store they visited. One person who was certainly enthusiastic is Greg Daniel, who was officially the first person in the world to buy a copy of the new OS. While Microsoft is rumoured to be planning to spend more than $ 1.5 billion promoting the OS, there has been very little advertising in the run up to the release surprisingly, likely explaining the muted response so far. Update: In a related story, Australians seems to be showing more enthusiasm, seemingly filling the Harvey Norman Store waiting in line for their Windows 8 retail copies. CNET has pictures of what will likely be the first buyer of a Microsoft Surface tablet in the world. Chen Shi has started queuing at the Beijing Suning, the retail chain that will be selling the surface in China. Due to time zones they will be the first to officially start selling the tablet on the 26th. From the look of the stiles behind him Microsoft expects even bigger crowds to appear eventually. Microsoft has also started shipping the tablet to those who pre-ordered online, but there is growing concern that even those who ordered early will not be getting it on the big day, making Shi’s strategy not that mad after all. Anandtech has published an extremely detailed review of the the Microsoft Surface RT. The review covers issues such as the performance of the touch and type covers, battery life, and detailed bench marks of performance, application loading times and even WIFI speeds. After all that they conclude: Surface is the most flexible tablet I’ve ever used. Through two seemingly simple additions to the design (but incredibly complex to actually develop and implement), Microsoft took a tablet and turned it into something much more. If you’re frustrated by productivity limits of currently available tablets, Surface really seems to be the right formula for a solution. It’s important to note that Microsoft’s execution with Surface establishes the company as a competitive powerhouse in the mobile design market. I can only imagine what multiple revs of the design will give us, not to mention what could happen if Microsoft set its obsessive sights ...

As regular readers will know my favourite device Windows 8 device is the Asus Taichi, the Dual-screened Windows 8 laptop. The above ad does a good job of positioning the Windows 8 tablet as a premium product and “elegant tool” which one would be “proud to use”, and it is certainly more of a status symbol than just another boring iPad which 200 million people own already. Of course at $1300 and $1600 the price tag also tells its own story. Do our readers agree? Let us know below. ...

Asus has posted this video describing the conception and design of their Asus Taichi, Asus Transformer Book, Asus VivoTab and Asus Vivobook tablets and hybrids. The video shows a lot more thought than one expected went into the creation of these tablets, for example moving the release button to the tablet on the Asus Transformer Book so the tablet can be released without opening the dock, and having a special high speed bus to move signals rapidly from the dock to the tablet. The video also revealed Asus had their own version of a magnetically docked keyboard, seen in the picture above. Overall, the level of innovation present in these devices will help go a long way in making sure Windows 8 tablets are serious competitors in the market. Via Neowin.net ...

The Verge have posted their review of the Microsoft Surface RT. They seems to like the hardware, except for the screen aspect ratio, which they found troublesome in many scenarios. Like others he also complained about the fixed angle of kickstand. They found battery life impressive and the device speedy, but complained of crashes in apps and of course the small selection of apps in general. He concluded: Maybe I say this too often, but I wanted to love this device. Actually, I wanted to love the Surface when I first saw it, before I even got my hands on the review unit. It made Windows 8 make sense in a way other products had not, and I could see a world where this kind of device was the only one I carried with me. Once I did get the review unit, I wanted to love it even more. And ...
