The Videolan team have posted an update on their KickStarter page after their fundraiser hit 90% of their £40,000 target with 7 days still to go. Standing at £36,615 at the time of writing, the team explained their plan to port VLC from Windows 8 Desktop to Windows 8 Metro, needed because the Windows ecosystem was moving in that direction, required portions of their code to be rewritten to meet Windows Metro ideals of responsiveness and the ability to wake and sleep as needed. Because VLC is an open source project the code will be re-usable by other projects making the same jump. VLC developer Geoffroy Couprie writes: Why am I excited to work on this port? This KickStarter will give us the opportunity to work full time on WinRT for a few months, and solve all these challenges for us, but also for other open source projects. We already ...

When Windows RT development was in final stages, it was reported that HTC was denied by Microsoft in becoming Windows RT OEM. It was said that Microsoft declined due to”concern that HTC doesn’t sell enough devices or have ample experience making tablets”. Now Bloomberg reports that HTC is working on two Windows RT tablets. One with 12-inch screen and another with 7-inch screen that will compete with iPad Mini, Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle. Both these tablets will reportedly can also make phone calls and will be powered by Qualcomm SnapDragon processors. The devices are expected to go on sale in 3Q 2013. Bloomberg also added that HTC did not choose Intel processors because it was concerned about the end user pricing which will go upto $1000. After the release of Microsoft Surface, many Windows RT OEMs scaled back their plans and it may be the reason behind HTC’s inclusion ...

Microsoft is pushing out an update for the Mail, Calendar and Messaging apps in Windows 8. The changelog notes the following improvements: Group email messages by conversation to keep your inbox organised. Respond to meeting invitations directly from your inbox. Get things done more quickly with faster performance in all apps. Experience better reliability and usability based on feedback from customers like you. My experience with the mail app so far has not been great, with limited features and the app completely unable to send email from my main mail account, no matter how I tweak the settings. The good news is that the email does now actually work.  The bad news is that all the mail that was stuck in my outbox has now suddenly been sent The mail app does overall also feel much faster. Have our readers noticed any other significant improvements? Let us know below. Thanks ...

InformationWeek reports that most PC OEMs will be missing the holiday season with their Windows 8 tablets powered by Intel’s dual-core Clover Trial Atom Z2760 processor, Delays are said to be affecting Dell’s Latitude 10 tablet, the  HP  Envy x2, the Asus  VivoTab Smart and the Lenovo  ThinkPad Tablet 2. Issued appear to be centred around drivers for the chipsets, and at this time only Samsung  ATIV Smart PC and Acer Iconia W510 are shipping with the processor. Noting that Dell and HP are targeting businesses with their tablets rather than consumers, analyst Cindy Shaw of research firm DISCERN noted: “HP and Dell are conceding they’ve given up on the consumer, so missing the holiday season is not that big of a deal. They’re not missing that magical time of the year, but the longer it takes for businesses to get their hands on evaluation units, the longer it’s going ...

Now in typical Sinofsky fashion Steve made the announcement above on twitter, saying he is returning to Harvard Business School to teach and share his experience built up over decades of working at Microsoft.
