This is a really bad news for Windows RT Eco-system. Samsung has decided not to release its only Windows RT tablet Ativ Tab in US. Samsung indicated that modest response from retail for such products and a lot of investment needed to inform consumers about the benefits of Windows RT are the reason behind their decision. There wasn’t really a very clear positioning of what Windows RT meant in the marketplace, what it stood for relative to Windows 8, that was being done in an effective manner to the consumer. When we did some tests and studies on how we could go to market with a Windows RT device, we determined there was a lot of heavy lifting we still needed to do to educate the customer on what Windows RT was. And that heavy lifting was going to require pretty heavy investment. When we added those two things up, ...

We wrote only a few days ago about a complicated Windows RT jailbreak which allows unsigned ARM apps to be run on Windows RT. Now the jailbreak has been simplified and automated, allowing anyone to jailbreak their Windows RT tablet and install a number of ARM apps such as VNC or Putty. If this jailbreak persists for a few months one can imagine the library of ARM apps will greatly increase, of course also increasing the value of hack. The hack does not persist across reboots, but that is really the only complication which will stop the general Surface community from using it. Read more about the hack and download it from XDA-Developers here. Via TNW ...

While Microsoft has never been very open about Windows Phone sales, they are quite happy to trumpet their Windows 8 achievements. Tammi Reller, Chief Financial and Chief Marketing Officer for Windows announced that since the launch in late October of Windows 8 they have sold 60 million licenses to the OS. The statement was made at the JP Morgan Tech Forum at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 8. The figure includes "sell in to OEMs for new PCs" and upgrades, said Reller, also saying this was roughly in line with Windows 7 sales. It is not clear how many of these licenses are actually in the hands of users, or are for OEM inventory or even downgrades to Windows 7.  Microsoft however expected to sell 500 million Windows 8 licenses by the end of 2013, which is guaranteed to create a gigantic market for developers To ...

At CES 2013 Intel has announced that all laptops which carry the Ultrabook brand and use the 4th generation Intel Core Haswell processor will need to come equipped with a touch screen and WIDI wireless screen technology. WiDi allows PCs to send up to 1080p video and 5.1 sound to compatible systems. Despite these added components Intel expects Ultrabooks to drop in price to around $599, from a typical $999 at present. Intel also expects the next generation ultrabooks to have up to 13 hours battery life, saying users will be able to forget taking the charger with them. Increasing the proportion of PCs with touch screens will likely provide a major boost for Windows 8, and make it clear to buyers why Windows 8 is the preferred OS over Windows 7. Intel also announced their new Bay Trail Quad-core Atom processor with double the performance of current generation Atoms ...

It is due to the fact that supplies of touch panels are limited that notebooks with touchscreen control features tend to be around $100-$200 more expensive than those without; therefore as a result customers are more inclined to purchase Windows 7 based notebook models in which touchscreen control features are not necessary. Currently –according to Digitimes Research- touchscreen-based notebooks contributed to 0.5% of total notebook shipments at the end of 2012, however once touch panel supplies increase and become cheaper, the percentage is expected to increase to 10% in 2013. While Windows 8 works perfectly fine using just a keyboard and a mouse, it does not deliver the new type of experience users expect from our touch-screen driven lifestyle these days.  It is expected that the wide availability of affordable touch screen laptops and tablets will provide the significant boost in sales which have eluded Windows 8 so far.
