Microsoft today started roll out of an update to Windows Store that will provide an enhanced user experience for users in navigation and browsing of apps. It also allows developers to do price promotions on their apps, and more to further improve app discoverability and minimize customer confusion. Today’s update focuses on enhancements that address customer feedback and makes it easier for users to find your apps including: Persistent Store navigation bar – enables users to discover and filter apps by Category, Top charts and Collections Collections – expanded set of Collections, accessible from the Store landing page. Windows Intune is a cloud service from Microsoft that allows Enterprise to manage the devices of their employees with ease. Microsoft is updating Intune updated on a regular basis, roughly every quarter. The previously announced Windows Intune features are now rolling out. It includes support for Windows Phone 8.1 and Samsung KNOX Standard (formerly Samsung SAFE) support. At TechEd conference held yesterday, Microsoft revealed the upcoming features for Windows Intune in Q4 of CY2014. Microsoft today released a preview of Visual Studio tooling support for Apache Cordova. This will help developers build multi-device hybrid mobile applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, targeting a broad range of mobile devices. Apache Cordova is a popular open source platform for creating such platform. Microsoft Open Technologies has contributed in making Cordova tools for Visual Studio. The web developers can use their existing skills in HTML and JavaScript to create hybrid packaged apps for multiple devices while taking advantage of each device’s capabilities. Microsoft previously announced that Windows 8.1 users need to update to Windows 8.1 update by to further receive security updates. Microsoft has now extended the deadline to June 10th, so customers will continue to receive security updates even though they are in Windows 8.1. While we believe the majority of people have received the update, we recognize that not all have. Having our customers running their devices with the latest updates is super important to us. And we’re committed to helping ensure their safety. Canalys today reported that worldwide client PC shipments which includes tablets reached 123.7 million units in Q1 2014, up 5% year on year. Even though the growth in tablet shipments slowed to 21%, yet at 50.8 million units they continued to out-ship notebooks. Notebooks shipments fell sharply in China and European regions while US remained flat. Lenovo continued to lead among the Windows OEM whereas Samsung is pushed to 4th place by HP as they are leaving the mainstream PC ecosystem to focus on their mobile efforts. Lenovo did well in the quarter, increasing its PC market share from 10% to 12% with 15.0 million units shipped. It achieved solid annual growth in all PC categories and is now placed first, second and third in the notebook, desktop and tablet markets respectively. Microsoft’s latest cybersecurity report, released Wednesday, revealed a 70 percent decline in the number of severe vulnerabilities that were exploited in Microsoft products between 2010 and 2013. New research conducted by Trustworthy Computing’s Security Science team shows a 70 percent decline in the number of severe vulnerabilities (those that can enable remote code execution) that were exploited in Microsoft products between 2010 and 2013. This is a clear indication that newer products are providing better protection, even in cases where vulnerabilities exist. While this trend is promising, cybercriminals aren’t giving up.
