Chitika Ad Network today released their report on the distribution of web usage among leading tablet devices for early July 2014 in the U.S. and Canadian tablet. The results are not so encouraging for Microsoft. Despite the fire sale of Surface RT tablets followed by Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 in the market, Microsoft tablets accounted for only 1.4% of the total market. When you compare this to last year’s numbers, Microsoft has almost tripled it from 0.5%. But, you have to compare this with the market leader Apple which dominates the list with 78% usage share. Even though these numbers may not be highly accurate, this report shows that Microsoft has a very long way to go in tablet market in the coming years. During the earnings call, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about the Windows OS and the first-party devices and he said that Microsoft is approaching the Windows OS business with a bold, challenger mindset and pushing both the product and business model forward. He highlighted the fact that Windows licenses are zero dollars for any OEM building a device less than nine inches and also added a low-cost Windows offering with Bing integration for OEMs. These changes are expected to bring Windows tablets and clamshells at lower price points. Windows 8.1 Update 2 builds got leaked on the web few weeks back. Those builds revealed that Windows 8.1 Update 2 does not include any new features for the consumers, instead it includes platform improvements that will improve the under the hood experience. At WPC keynote held today, Microsoft spoke about the app momentum in Windows Store. The number of apps in Windows Store has increased by over 100% over the last year. During the presentation, Microsoft marketing executive highlighted that Windows Store now includes consumer apps like WhatsApp, Spotify and WeChat. We all know that these apps are not available in Windows Store yet. I guess the person who made the presentation got confused between Windows Store and Windows Phone Store. In April, Microsoft announced that their group video calling experience free to existing platforms, with additional device support coming soon. Today, with this app update, they are bringing the feature to Windows tablets and Windows 2 in 1 devices. Watch the video demo above to see how it works. Microsoft Research today spoke about their Project Adam at the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit. It is an state of an art machine learning and artificial intelligence program that enable softwares to visually recognize any object. Project Adam and its object classification is built on a massive dataset of 14 million images from the Web and sites such as Flickr, made up of more than 22,000 categories drawn from user-generated tags by Microsoft resesarcher Trishul Chilimbi  and his team. Microsoft claims that this program is twice more accurate in its object recognition and 50 times faster than other systems. To show this system in action, Microsoft used a live dog on stage and Project Adam powered phone recognized the breed of the dog. Earlier this week, we reported that Microsoft is giving away Intel Galileo board to developers who sign up for the program. Today, Microsoft detailed the roll out of the program on their official blog. Microsoft has updated their website Windowsondevices.com withSDK document and examples.  Through this program we are introducing a new Windows Developer for IoT Portal, with documentation and examples to support the developer kits we are starting to ship in small batches. These developer kits include a Galileo board and preview Windows image that supports the standard Arduino Wiring API set and a subset of Win32 API. This Windows image does not yet support Galileo boards outside of our program.
