Yesterday, we saw a sudden burst of information about Microsoft’s next generation personal assistant codenamed ‘Cortana’. First, there was a report that Microsoft is planning to release it as part of Windows Phone 8.1 and it will take on Apple’s Siri. Later, there were some screenshots of the early prototype of Cortana running on a Windows Phone 8 device. The screenshots revealed that Cortana is more than a speech assistant, it takes lots of contextual data like location, wifi network, weather, calender appointments, etc to assist you. Cortana will be able to learn and adapt over time as it is relying on machine-learning technology and the “Satori” knowledge repository which now powers Bing. As reported few days back, Dell is releasing its first 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet later this year. This 8-inch tablet will run on Intel Atom “Bay Trail” processor, 1280 x 800 IPS display, battery life of 10+ hours, .88 pounds in weight, thickness of .35 inches and will come in variety of colors. In recent years, Intel was promoting perceptual computing using external camera that can be connected to laptops and desktops. At IDF, Today Kirk Skaugen from Intel announced that built-in 3D cameras will be coming to laptops and desktops some time 2nd half of 2014 and will be based on Intel’s Broadwell ships. Every month on second Tuesday, Microsoft will release release patches and updates for its software and hardware lineups. Surface RT and Surface Pro devices were also getting these updates since launch and this month is an exception. There is no firmware update for both Surface RT and Surface Pro devices this month from Microsoft. I guess, Microsoft is working on delivering Windows 8.1 with fully optimized firmware for both these devices in October. When asked about the lack of updates this month, Microsoft commented the following to Neowin, Windows and Surface are periodically updated with new features and improvements as they become available, and they will continue to receive updates as needed. Microsoft today announced that they are releasing Windows 8.1 RTM build to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Earlier, Microsoft announced that they are not going to release RTM bits on MSDN before the public release in October, but due to negative feedback from partners and developers, they reversed their decision. Based on the feedback from you and our partners, we’re pleased to announce that we will be making available our current Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro RTM builds (as well as Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM builds) to the developer and IT professional communities via MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. Back in June along with the announcement about Windows 8.1 update, Microsoft revealed that official apps for Facebook, Foursquare, NFL Fantasy Football and Flipboard are coming to Windows 8/RT devices.
