While there are many positives and negatives one can list out for the announced Microsoft-Nokia deal, I have only one concern. The marketing team at Microsoft is completely different from the marketing team at Nokia. You can just tell the difference by observing them from the recent campaigns. Nokia’s marketing is always bold, straight-forward and nowadays takes on its competition directly and in-directly through various forms of marketing activities. It worked most of the time for Nokia and I fear Microsoft could change this. In his letter to Microsoft, Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is planning to integrate global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. We are planning to integrate all global marketing under Tami Reller and Mark Penn. It is very important that we pursue a unified brand and advertising strategy as soon as possible. While Microsoft has revealed almost all the information on what the deal with Nokia is and how they will approach it, we are yet to know the changes inside Microsoft after the Nokia deal. After three months, they released Surface Pro device running full versions of Windows 8 focusing on enterprise users. During last financial quarter, Microsoft announced a $900 million write off due to unsold inventory. Microsoft has just started expanding the availability of Surface devices to over dozen countries through partner retailers. They just started limited channel availability  of Surface ...

According to Netmarketshare’s numbers, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser gained market share in August hitting a two-year high of 57.6 percent. Google Chrome lost the most among the major browsers which saw its usage drop from 17.76 percent to 16 percent. I was surprised by the numbers when I saw it first, then came to know that Netmarketshare changed the way they measure their numbers this month. Ed Bott from ZDNet summarized it as follows, Net Applications recently changed its formula for measuring usage. In an undated note labeled “Important methodology change,” the company explains: This month we start deducting hidden pages from our usage share statistics. Hidden pages are pages that are rendered but never viewed by the user, therefore, they should not be included in usage share data.
