(Blue is Microsoft influence, green is Google) Techcrunch has an interesting article on the implication of the Skype deal on the balance of power in the social network universe and it turns out it certainly tips the game into Microsoft’s favour. Skype with 663 million registered users outnumber Facebook, and of course Microsoft does have it fingers in the 629 million user Facebook pie.  Ad to this the 364 million active Hotmail users and the 330 million Windows Live users (not shown in the graphic above) is is clear Microsoft has a massive presence, and much more significant than Google’s 193 million Gmail users and 10 million Google Latitude users.  Does anyone even still use Buzz? One of the innovations Microsoft added to IE9 is support for notifications in websites pinned to the task bar. Facebook and Ebay already supports this, and now finally one of Microsoft’s highest profile properties, Hotmail, is also getting support for this feature. To get desktop notifications for new email on your taskbar without installing any additional software one simply need to sign in to Hotmail in IE9, go to your Inbox and drag the Hotmail tab from the address bar in IE down to the taskbar, and drop it there. The Jump List on the Pinned site of course also gives quick and easy access to shortcuts for composing a new email, your calendar and contacts. Windows Live Hotmail is the world’s largest web-based email service with nearly 364 million users, far ahead of rivals Yahoo! Mail (280 million) and Gmail (191 million). Facebook however everyone has heard of, and it will serve as a bit of a reminder of WLM’s scale that it is now the 2nd biggest app on the massive social network, only second to CityVille from Zynga and ahead of the notorious Farmville. Even better, according to  AppData stats collected by newsgrange.com while WLM is on its way up, adding 300,000 over the last week, CityVille is on its way down, losing almost 600,000 users over the same period. Windows Live Messenger integrates with Facebook, allowing Facebook chat access and also updates with a much better interface than available on the website itself. Hopefully the ascendancy of the app will remind others that Microsoft still has a very relevant product. Via theNextweb.com ...
