Netflix today announced that Sony PS3 has emerged as their top platform for streaming videos. This comes as a surprise for many because Microsoft Xbox is always known for its entertainment hub nature and still PS3 beats Xbox in Netflix streaming hours. “PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall,” said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. “PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.” But does it matter? I think the reason Netflix streaming hours on PS3 is higher than Xbox 360 because ...

GamerAnx.com reports that a well-known gaming figure, Hector Martin or otherwise known as "Marcan," may have spilled the beans on at least one aspect of the next Xbox’s processor specs, noting the device “only” ran at 1.6 Ghz, half of the 3.2 Ghz of the current generation Xbox 360. The information was delivered in the context of disappointment in the 1.2 Ghz clock speed of the new Wii U, with Martin countering: If you want more evidence that MHz isn’t everything, a little birdie points out that Durango (Xbox 720) is specc’ed to have a 1.6GHz CPU. Food for thought. (And don’t bother asking me who that little birdie is.) Of course clock speed was more of an obsession with the last decade, and by 2012 we have now learned that clock speed is far from the be all and end all of performance. A larger number of dedicated cores ...

Citing the usual “people familiar with the company’s plans”, Bloomberg has confirmed Microsoft is planning to release a follow-up to the popular Xbox 360 console by Black Friday next year. They did not expand on the features of the new console, but earlier leaks suggests the device will have a newer version of the Kinect sensor and the ability to play Blu-ray disks. Apparently Microsoft is still deciding between whether to announce the console at E3 or in a separate event. Bloomberg did not comment on rumours of the so-called Xbox Mini, which would be more streaming media and less games orientated. Read more at Bloomberg here. Via the Verge.com ...

Microsoft today shared some internal numbers regarding Xbox 360 platform sales performance over the Black Friday weekend. Microsoft sold over 750,000 consoles over the weekend in US alone. This number trumps the Nintendo next generation Wii U’s sales number of 400,000 units. Xbox 360 sold more than 750,000 consoles in the U.S. alone –exceeding internal forecasts. Three month Xbox LIVE Gold Subscription sales increased more than 50 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday week. We saw incredible activity on Xbox over the weekend. The landmark trial between Google subsidiary Motorola and Microsoft is over even before we realized it started. Much of the sensitive material the trial could have uncovered remains confidential, as the court was cleared for 2 hours of secret testimony. The stakes are high – Motorola contends Microsoft will make $94 billion from their Xbox game console by 2017, and that they deserve $4 billion of these, due to the use of their patents. Microsoft is only willing to pay $1 million per year. U.S. District Judge James Robart will deliver a decision by Spring next year of what constitutes a reasonable fee for a FRAND patent – the first time a judge had to rule on this, likely setting a precedent for the whole industry. If fees are set low enough it could result in an explosion of innovation as companies use standard-essential patents freely while paying nominal fees ...
