Microsoft’s Lionhead Studios are laying off up to 10% of their work force after Fable: The Journey, completed its development. In a statement to IGN Microsoft said: “Following the completion of Fable: The Journey the Lionhead studio is in the process of beginning work on its next projects. As is common in the games industry, a reduced headcount is needed as projects kick-off and ramp up as development gets underway. At this time a very small number of positions have been identified as at risk of redundancy and the affected employees were notified today. We are working very closely with those people during this difficult time, to help them explore alternative opportunities within Microsoft including new roles at Microsoft Studios which is actively hiring.” While Microsoft blames the lay-offs on the cyclical nature of jobs in the game development market, it is of note that Peter Molyneux left the studio ...

Microsoft is doing their bit for good citizenship by promoting election participation on Xbox Live. They broadcast the Presidential debates on Xbox Live, and polled watchers at the same time. Venturebeat reports: "More than 100,000 members of Microsoft’s Xbox Live online community for the Xbox 360 tuned into the presidential debate via their game consoles. And based on 2 million real-time responses to 70 polling questions, Barack Obama won the second debate." Showing that the service is not inherently biased, challenger Mitt Romney won the first debate, a consensus I think most would agree with. Apparently the participants are pretty representative of the voting population, with 80% being  aged 18-44, 29% Republican and 25% Democrat, expect for men being vastly over-represented at 66% of the participants vs 34% female. "88% of the respondents were likely voters and 69% engaged to the point of not only voting, but responding that they ...

The latest Xbox 360 Dashboard update, which has been in beta for some time, is now rolling out to console owners. The star feature of the update is the arrival of IE9 on Xbox 360.  This enables users to browse the web from the couch, controlling the experience using Xbox Smart Glass from their favourite smartphone or tablet.  This app is expected to hit the market on the 26th, with the release of Windows 8 also. Unfortunately one needs an Xbox Live Gold member ship to gain access to the browser, a negative for those who mainly use the Xbox 360 as a media device. The full feature list for the update include: Refreshed Xbox 360 Dashboard. We’ve updated the UI with a few things, including an updated layout with more tiles, a combined TV & Movies channel and, in the US, a Sports destination. Internet Explorer for Xbox. With ...

Except for the issue that many new features will not be coming to Windows Phone 7, Xbox Music Pass only adds features to Zune Pass for subscribers, who can look forward to a cross-platform music streaming client, a bigger library, portable playlists and eventually the ability to plug the holes in the streaming selection by uploading your own tracks. Microsoft sent the above circular to their Zune Pass subscribers informing them of the same, and also, as a sweetener, offered them 1,000 Microsoft Points, which should be just about enough to hire a movie or buy a few tracks, which is not bad for doing nothing. Let the Xbox Music party begin! Via Neowin.net. Thanks Amedeo for the tip. ...

As part of a Microsoft’s MyAchievements program Microsoft is sending gamers 20 free Microsoft Points on their birthday. The free gift is however not being well received, due to the paltry amount (20 Microsoft points is only worth around $0.25) and due to the numerous conditions attached. Only gamers with Gamerscore over 3000 qualify for the gift, and users will have to wait till the 15th of the month to actually receive the Points. Users with a Gamerscore above 10,000 get a rebate of one percent for every Xbox LIVE purchase and gamers with a Gamerscore above 25,000 will be a two percent rebate credited to their Xbox account. To add insult to injury, there is nothing in the Xbox store which can be purchased for only 20 Microsoft Points. This may be a promotion Microsoft may want to rethink. Maybe an “It’s my Birthday!” Avatar Prop would be a ...
