Facebook Acquires Oculus, To Compete With Microsoft In The Future Of Gaming

While many of us were expecting Microsoft to make some announcements regarding Virtual Reality at GDC, Sony revealed their prototype called Project Morpheus. It is similar to Oculus Rift where gamers will be wearing the device on their heads to experience the immersive experience. Today, Facebook shocked and surprised the tech industry by acquiring Oculus. Read the full press release below,

MENLO PARK, Calif., March 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days preceding March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share).  The agreement also provides for an additional $300 million earn-out in cash and stock based on the achievement of certain milestones.

Oculus is the leader in immersive virtual reality technology and has already built strong interest among developers, having received more than 75,000 orders for development kits for the company’s virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift. While the applications for virtual reality technology beyond gaming are in their nascent stages, several industries are already experimenting with the technology, and Facebook plans to extend Oculus’ existing advantage in gaming to new verticals, including communications, media and entertainment, education and other areas.  Given these broad potential applications, virtual reality technology is a strong candidate to emerge as the next social and communications platform.

Oculus will maintain its headquarters in Irvine, CA, and will continue development of the Oculus Rift, its ground-breaking virtual reality platform.

The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014.

    What is with the last two articles. First saying that Microsoft was in the wrong for revoking an app and looking through someone’s email..and now saying that fb bough OR to compete with MS? What kind of crap is that. They explained why they purchased Oculus VR. It had nothing to do with directly competing with Microsoft. Sony on the other hand I can see.

    They’re competing with Sony because Microsoft doesn’t have VR technology yet…unless they can build it off of Kinect, but they have said that they are wading in the pool and watching by the wayside to see where the market will go instead of projecting where it will go. Wayne Gretzky said that he would skate
    where the puck was going to be!

    I don’t know about this aquirement by facebook. What have been more logical to see oculus rift see itself develop more independantly. I have the feeling the buy out is too soon. Well I guess it’s all in facebooks hands now. Facebook virutual texting with WhatsOculus? “Show me the Money!”

    MS has already gone on record saying they are waiting to see what the consumer reception is for VR. remember how Sony PS3 was Preaching 3D games but it hasn’t really taken off cause only a small market actually owns 3D Tvs.
