Italian VoIP Telephone Provider Files Complaint Against Windows+Skype Integration

14

Early this year, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Skype for $8.1 billion. Since the announcement, the deal is being approved by various legal organizations around the world. In June, US antitrust regulators approved the deal and Microsoft is waiting for European Commission’s approval. We have not seen any announcements from Microsoft on any product integration with Skype so far but that didn’t stop Italian VoIP telephone trovider Messagenet SpA to file a complaint to EU regarding Skype/Microsoft.

In the letter sent to EC they claim,

“Anti-competitive bundling of Skype into the Microsoft Operating system should be prohibited in any case,”

“Skype and Microsoft should be obliged to make interopeable their IP-to-IP voice and videotelephony and presence services, by disclosing to competitors the interfaces required for their products to be able to ‘talk’ with the ubiquitous Skype software, including HD voice functions,”

EU antitrust spokesperson Amelia Torres said on this matter that, “As in any merger case, we are studying the observations received by third parties,” .

Hope Microsoft and Skype crosses the hurdle.

And how is it alright for Apple to bundle Facetime with iOS?

    • ZipZapRap

Because iOS isn’t a monopoly. Windows is.

      • Dan

        Windows Phone isn’t.

        • ZipZapRap

What are you on about? The complaint is against Windows, not Windows Phone.

            Corrected myself above ;)

Ok, that was rather embarassing. I was reading this post as Windows Phone, rather than Windows. Oops. I understand now, as Windows is huge.

There’s no integrations of Skype in Windows, I don’t see it, and MS hasn’t hinted at it or talked about it.  All there is is cross-service support between Skype and other MS communication services like Lync and Messanger and then support for Skype on the Xbox 360.

On Windows, even Windows 8, Skype is still going to be a downloadible program like it is now.   This complaint is baseless.

Plus, even if it is integrated, users still have the option to use it or other competitor’s. Its not like ports and sockets are closed to prevent competitors from coding their own solution for Windows. This complaint is baseless.

tell that to the idiots who complained about IE

and well you can see still there is a Windows N without windows media player. and yeah Microsoft was fined with €497m, if i remember good.
for only having wmp! like if it blocked installation of every other player.

I think they are free to build their own OS and integrate here everything what they need, if they don’t like MS-Skype integration.

since other markets have approved the deal it is still a possible for Microsoft to go ahead with the deal, correct? they can easily ship a different version to Europe without skype integrated and make it downloadable. and once again because of EU regulators the consumers there will get a crippled down OS that lacks essential features.

PS: at work using firefox 6 and the lack of auto-correct that I got so used to in IE10 is really pissing me off. it’s a feature you really didn’t think you needed before until you’ve used it. I applaud Microsoft for innovating, going above the norm. they not only implemented a spell checker, but included auto-correction too…..I miss IE now. smh.

the main issue is most people will blame Microsoft if the EU version is crippled because they think they don’t care or cannot integrate their software….really, Google and Apple are getting a pass on everything while Microsoft is getting the shaft…WTF

at the end of the day its not about Windows or anything. Its about a company trying to keep up with the competition. It seems like EU will be in peace once Microsoft disappears from the market. Probably the judges are iPhone users anyway….

iPad also has almost a monopoly. So why is nobody complaining that Apple is using facetime while effectively blocking the competition? same right for everyone.
