Microsoft announce 40 million Windows 8 licenses sold in 30 days

In a blog post Microsoft revealed that the company has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses to date.

The number is the first official mention of the sales rate of the OS after Microsoft revealed that it sold 4 million licenses in the 3 days after the launch, indicating the run rate has remained about the same as after the launch- quite an achievement.

Microsoft revealed the information first to industry and financial analysts, investors and media at Credit Suisse 2012 , and also confirmed that Windows 8 was outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades.

Tami Reller, Windows Chief Marketing and Financial Officer said:

“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far.”

Microsoft also announced thats several apps in the Windows 8 store has passed the $25,000 revenue mark, which is in fact pretty great news, and will hopefully result in more developers investing in quality apps in the store.

Microsoft has said they aim to sell 400 million Windows 8 licenses in the first year, and at this rate it appears the company is right on the mark.

how many licenses are actually being used? Meaning, how many actual users are there?

    • schultzycom

Really, So Apple announce 10 million licenses, nobody says how many are used. Microsoft sell 40 million and you want to know how many are used? Get a life.

      • Big D

Either way. Sold licenses = big money for Microsoft. Well done!

Dude, calm down. Im not trying to say they are lying or anything. I just want them to release that info so that developers see how many potential customers they are missing out of. Im not hating on MS, I want W8 & WP to do well. Just so you know, I own a Surface, Lumia 900, and Win7 PC. Sent from my Windows Phone

I don’t know if there is a way to find out that number. Maybe you can do guesstimates based on web traffic.

        • darthtigris

These are similar figures to what the others release. It should be enough for developers to see what they’re missing out on. If it’s not, then what can you do for biased devs?

        • Smity Smiter

Well, this is the way Microsoft is going, there’s no turning back now. And Windows PC market share is 90+ %, if a dev “needs a reason” to develop for Windows, he might as well not.

Sorry, thought you were an Apple fandroid. I am just tired of the trolls and took it that is what you were doing… My bad.

          • blackhawk556

Apology accepted :) iTards and fandroids do get annoying. 😀

This part in the article probably could give an indication of how many W8 are actively used: “Microsoft also announced that(s) several apps in the Windows 8 store has passed the $25,000 revenue mark”.

      • blackhawk556

Now that I’ve read that part again, it makes a big difference. At first I thought I read that only $25k has been made in total by all apps =P lol.
I still want to know how many users there are. Anyone know when MS releases financial for the quarter again??

January. But that won’t tell you in use vs sold either. In fact they normally don’t even break out unit sales. But they sometimes make exceptions for new releases, like they did here. You’ll have to look to the various 3rd pty data sites who track this stuff in use. The info on downloads and apps already over $25K is actually more specific to that and encouraging. But they have a lot more work to do.

There are 1.3 billion Windows users world wide. 673 million users have W7, according to Microsoft figures two months ago. As of today 40 million use W8. After 3 days Microsoft sold 4 million W8 licenses, after 30 days 40 million W8 licenses. After 3 days the rate of W8 adoption was 20% higher than that of W7, so after 30 days the rate of adoption is still higher than W7, as reported by Microsoft. Every year 400 to 500 million windows PC’s are sold. The market share of Windows PC is 93% to 95%. I hope these figures helps you.

well if the needle slows down it means that sales have stalled. so next quarter should show more indication.

  • Julien

$25,000 revenue? You really mean twenty five thousand dollars? What kind of joke is this???

    • Julien

OK I had a look at the original post. It’s NOT the store that passed the $25k, but some individual apps. Your article is misleading !

      • Njoi Fontes

read again “several apps have passed the 25 K mark” how is that misleading. seems pretty clear to me

        • Tips_y

Exactly! It’s as clear as daylight to me!

          • Julien

Yes because the text was edited without the author mentioning it… instead of acknowledging the error, he just corrected himself ! But believe me, the original text did say that it was 25K for the whole store.

  • Wayneo5

wow. didn’t see that one coming. At this rate, along with all the positive analysis being post all around, it’s only a matter of time before everything is turned upside down by Microsoft’s efforts. Even the XBox 360 and WinPhone 8 are doing great

  • HighDefJunkies

Wait! I thought everyone was saying Win 8 is MS downfall??!!? What happened?

  • Dime09

    Go! Go! Microsoft!

  • Emi Cyberschreiber

HAHAHA and people said it was a fail and flop and blabla! xD i didn’t even expect so many in 30 days (specially when new win8 hardware is not available). but this is really good! im glad Windows 8 is selling good 😀

  • guesttt999

This is great news! Microsoft needs to continue pushing aggressively. Get those Surface devices rolling! All those analysts and tech bloggers who doubt Windows should shut up once and for all.

  • Bruce

I bought 4 and 3 of those are already up and running.

  • The__Truth__Hurts

Be cool if it could break 100 million before the end of the year. Now that will make people shut the F*&^ up.

Also be cool if they could break 50,000 apps before the end of the year as well.

    • Windows 8

Amen 😀 I would be supre excited and happy if this happens.

  • Windows 8

I absolutely love this !! I want it to cross Windows 7 in less than 2 months.
Now what will those naysayers report 😉

    • Smity Smiter

cross Windows 7’s number in 2 months!? (i hope you meant Windows 7’s 2 months number, otherwise it’s ~700 million in 2 months!)

  • Smity Smiter

And they said it wasn’t selling well. 1.33 million / day, well, that might be low according to MS’s scale.
