Microsoft Confirms That Office 2013 Service Pack 1 Is Coming Early Next Year

Microsoft today confirmed that Office 2013 SP1 is coming early next year. It will include performance improvements, feature updates and improved compatibility with Windows 8.1.

I want to give you a quick heads up that early next year we’ll release Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the 2013 set of products including Office, SharePoint and Exchange.  SP1 will deliver performance enhancements, feature updates and improve compatibility with Windows 8.1.  Of course if you’re an Office 365 customer, you’re always up to date with the latest versions of our products.  We’ll have more details to share on all that is coming in SP1 and how customers can acquire it closer to availability.

I thought they were done with Service Packs and just release updates on the fly. For example, I just got a bunch of awesome updates to Excel, Outlook and Lync. But I guess Service Packs are just for the boxed versions and the Office 365 (which I’m on) gets updates all the time.

Clouds in general are easier to update because you have more control over all the software, this is why I prefer Microsoft Office 365 myself, you’ll always get the latest security fixes.

Can someone explain me if this SP is going to be available for all the Office 2013 versions? Will it be free? Thanks!
