In Building Windows 8 blog today, Microsoft detailed the expanded capabilities of DirectX to provide a common hardware-accelerated graphics platform for a broader range of high performance applications. Microsoft developed the graphics platform for Windows 8 with the following in mind,
1. Ensure that all Metro style experiences are rendered smoothly and quickly.
2. Provide a hardware-accelerated platform for all Metro style apps.
3. Add new capabilities to DirectX to enable stunning visual experiences.
4. Support the widest diversity of graphics hardware ever.
Apart from the improvements on the common graphics platform, Microsoft has also added support for immersive, 3D gaming, with great performance and new features such as stereoscopic 3D.
